This term meant the world to my family. They held me up to this high standard that I strived for, that is until I realized how unhappy I was trying to please others and not myself. I never had a mind of my own. The day I realized I had to stand up for myself and do what made me happy was the first day of 11th grade. Walking down the same hallway as I did the years before, and going to strictly academic classes. I thought to myself, “how did I get stuck in this never ending loop?” It was time for a change. Without my mom’s permission I went to the guidance counselor for a class change form. I explained to him, “I am not being challenged in my classes! Your job is to give me classes that challenge me!” He offered AP classes or duel enrollment at the community college, but I turned them all down. This was my time to suggest the classes I have always wanted to take. “How about an art class?” I suggested. He paused, nodded, and signed my release form to change my classes. That was the easy part. Explaining it to my mom was a whole new problem. She called me every name in the book and practically stopped speaking to me. This was hurtful, but I knew it had to be done. The ambition and determination that I gained that day pushed me in all my future decisions. Why stay in your comfort zone if you are not happy? I want to be who I want to be. I will inspire others to stand up for themselves and be who they want to
