Middle School Reflection

Teaching at Russell Middle School was much different than teaching at Mountain Vista Elementary. Both experiences were fulfilling but each were completely different. In our lesson we taught the 7th grade advance math class about scale factoring. Our cooperating teacher had just introduced the topic to the class the day before we taught our lesson, so it was nice coming into the class and being able to teach the students something new. This lesson also had us teaching as a group and not in separate small groups. It was nice knowing that we could rely on each other a little more than last time. What worked well for us was being able to teach together. This worked well because we got to feed off of each other and see what worked best for ourselves …show more content…
At the end of our lesson we were told by our site supervisor to just make the worksheet more student friendly. This is an advance math class and our cooperating teacher really liked our worksheet, but she said that if it were for any other math class then the worksheet would have to be more student friendly. This just means that it would have to have some of the blanks filled in more on the worksheet, so students can get the hints from it and be able to work on it without having to try pull the information by themselves. This really didn't work for the students because it caused them a lot of confusion and made them ask a lot more questions. By the time the same question came up we had to regroup and talk about it all. Along with that I think I would work through the worksheet more with the students. We showed them what we were looking for once and then let them go on their own. But if we went through multiple examples with them then it would have helped them even more. We were told to try and model our thinking. Saying what we are thinking out loud and making it apparent on what we are looking for. This can help the students see what we want and how we want and how the "should" be thinking, even though they might think of the problem

Focusing on the positive encouraged them more, asking for their thoughts was another positive because they figured it out themselves and took pride in this achievement. Having them focus on the important learning targets, oral conversation instead of written commentary from me. Proving suggestions allowed them to think critically about what they were doing. They would compare their work to the task given, and describe their work, express freely their observation, and in an open forum with…

It has been a little over two months since I began my out of the classroom experience in the Shustova Chemistry lab. With many extractions, separations, Schlenk line setups, and NMR spectroscopies, I am feeling much more confortable preforming higher-level chemistry techniques all while upholding national safety standards. This sense of comfortableness did not come quickly. This is where the most challenging aspect of the Capstone Project comes into play. The challenge that I face when I go into lab twice a week is to feel confident with the procedures I have done before, and the slight tweaks I am told to make to hopefully reach the desired project.…

Working for the quality of my work and not for the grade has become my new mindset of the English subject, it has become a major improvement/emphasis in my daily life while attending this first quarter of 8th Grade English Honors based on motivational sayings by Mr. Royal. The development of this concept of mine has worked its way up and constructed itself based on the concept Mr. Royal has delivered to us about not only working hard, but being able to comprehend the overall image of the text, or literature, etc. Conveying the overall image of comprehension was a real hassle for me at first, but as the days flew by in this first quarter of English, I have learn to exhale all the stress, failures, and mishaps, and turn them into words that…

Freshman Seminar has had a very important impact on me so far this year, I have learned a lot of school, and life advice while taking this class. When I saw on my schedule that I would be taking this class I thought that it was going to be easy, and I would not be doing anything but sitting around and listening to lectures, I was wrong. I have learned so much from this class from calculating my GPA, to managing my bills. We have had a very challenging project called the "My Budget Project" and the main thing that this project has taught me is that you will always have to pay price whether it is dealing with currency, or decisions. Throughout this process of completing this project, I have learned a lot about myself, and how much stuff really…

I have studied the CCSS and strands in depth as one of the building leaders/trainers for Expeditionary Learning, balanced literacy and Thinking Maps. I have become an expert in the concepts and disciplines of those concepts, this knowledge was evident when I help write the 4th grade report card. It also is reflected in my plans and practice as I am able to anticipate students misconceptions.…

There is a stigma on those that are imprisoned. Many think they are uneducated individuals. Never judge a book by its cover or in this case the situation an individual may be in. Some entered prison with a high school education, a college education, or received their GED behind bars. Many of the inside students have continued learning even though they are serving time.…

Class: My goal for this class is a A+ grade the entire year. In past middle school I said the same thing but it never really happened. At the beginning of my 8th grade semester I would have an above average grade but it always went down from there until the last few weeks when I would do an EXTREME amount of work just to get all my grades up to optimal. This cycle of doing very little for three fourths of the semester and then doing homework from 2pm-1am was something I was always worrying about, but could never motivate myself to end it by doing my work when it was supposed to be done.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. When we enter into the classroom every day and prepare our lesson plans, we are doing more than just repeating material from a book. We are sharing our personal knowledge with those who will one day control the world. We put a little piece of ourselves in every student we encounter. Whether or not we actually influence them is up to the student. Therefore we must make every possible effort to make a huge impact on their lives each and every…

Being placed at East Swain Elementary and given the opportunity to observe the teacher and the students. Have truly taught me some valuable life lessons when writing the first reflection I touched on this some but not a whole lot. The main thing that I have learned is how to get the students attention I know for myself growing up in school I had a tendency to drift off and ignore what was going on because I didn't find it interesting. Well when watching Mr.Dunford who is my host teacher he teacher fifth grade math he put this in a new light for me while teaching about fractions he gives the overview of the lesson and than gives the students the chance to come up with a cool name to call it. Also he has given out M&M in cups with different amount in…

Introduction The time I spent with my student during our tutoring sessions gave me a first-hand experience of how it is like on a student to teacher level. I learned a lot from my student, Kade, as I hope he also learned from me. During this time, I was able to observe his strengths and his weakness. I had to be flexible to cater my lesson plan to my student, so he could build upon what he learned and advance through more challenging activities.…
