Middle School Observation

My TE-100 class went to Barr Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska and Northeast Elementary in Kearney, Nebraska. Due to a conflict I was unable to attend the Barr Middle School visit and went to Walnut Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska instead. At Walnut Middle School, I observed Mrs. Coble, the seventh grad math teacher. At Northeast, I observed Mrs. Tobey, a fourth grade teacher. After observing both schools I came to the conclusion that the two schools are very different from one another. Walnut is sixth through eight grade and Northeast is kindergarten through fifth grade. From the outside Walnut Middle School looked very bland and very big. On the other hand, Northeast elementary looked very colorful and small. When I went inside …show more content…
At Walnut Middle School they have a parent/ teacher committee where the teachers works alongside the parents to create the best school they can have. They also have movie nights where they invite the community to come watch a movie at the school. To advertise for the movie night they work with a local Spanish radio station and get the message across to people who only speak Spanish so that they can come to the movie night as well. Stewardship at Northeast Elementary was huge because they have many different programs to get their students involved in the community. The do Character Cats where fifth graders apply and interview to help the teacher during one of their recesses. It is preparing them for when they have a job someday because they have to do well or else they will have to step down from their position. They also have Safety Patrol for fifth grade students and make sure that all their students get to school safely. They recite the pledge everyday and third through fifth graders can sign up to say the pledge over the intercom. Something unique is that they have an outdoor learning center and fourth and fifth graders maintain it. The last thing is that the fourth graders are in charge of picking up the recyclables. Nurturing Pedagogy was apparent at Walnut mainly through the principal. When he was talking to us before we observed our classroom he said that he spends a lot of time with students who need some extra talking too. He also is in and out of the classroom because he truly cares about each student. Mrs. Coble was trying to prepare her students for high school when they will not baby you through every lesson and that came from a place of caring for her students. Nurturing Pedagogy was very evident at Northeast Elementary because Mrs. Tobey had a big poster that said “Accountable Talk”. There were 4 steps to the accountable talk. 1. Rephrase, 2. Rewind, 3. Review, 4. Recharge. She also showed that she cared

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

In the school year of 1971-1972, the concept of “middle Schools” became a countywide acceptance, creating a break between primary school and High School. Originally, Garrett Middle only had “two academic areas – currently the 6th and 7th grades. The 8th grade was completed for the 1978-1979 school year” (http://www.cobbk12.org/Garrett/history.aspx). In the year of 1978-1979 the concept of introducing the walls to the old open pods [this created triangular rooms, mentioned above]. Garrett Middle School also has a walking trail that crosses the campus.…

In addition to this teachers must have an ID to reenter the building and guests must be buzzed in by the front desk secretary. After entering the building any guest must sign in with the secretary and state why they were at the school for the day. Another point of safety is the playgrounds. There is a separate playground for the younger kids, this creates a safer, more enjoyable play time for both age groups. I think this creates an overall safe environment where children and teachers can place their focus solely on learning.…

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

Middle Grades are probably the most difficult grades to get through for everyone. During this time of physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and moral development for these students learning about the history of Georgia is literally the last thing they think about, if they even really think about it at all. These students are some of the most difficult students to keep their attention focused on the subject matter at hand, unless of course we are discussing them, then and only then will the teacher get their full attention. During the observation assignment I noticed a few of the developmental theories that correlated with the five developmental stages of middle school students: Bronfenbrenner, Erikson, and Hall.…

In this Action Research paper, I am going to discuss the demographics and break down of my classroom library, and the possible deficits it presents to the students who populate it. This is significant because the more a child is exposed to a rich and dynamic library of books the better he or she has to be fluent in both reading and writing (Tompkins, 2015). It is also essential to to remember that a lack of culturally variegated texts may have an negative impact on children. I will first discuss the context that contains all the breakdown of the district, secondly the individual makeup of what my school looks like and finally represent the individual classroom demographics.…

I was assigned to Ms. Pickholtz’s 1st grade class. When I first arrived to the charter school I was extremely nervous and a little anxious because just the thought of actually helping a teacher run a class seemed scary to me because I felt like I would do a horrible job at it. However, I was welcomed by both the teacher and the class…

Middle and High School Student Perceptions Regarding the Effectiveness of Teacher-Directed Bullying Interventions Introduction School bullying is an important topic in the field of primary education. It is a widely recognized problem for numerous school environments that poses potential detrimental effects if not properly addressed (Aluedse, 2006). Unfortunately, this issue is often shrouded by misinformation and a lack of understanding regarding the long-term impact bullying may produce. It can adversely affect the educational environment, not only for perpetrators, but for victims and witnesses (Casebeer, 2012). Regardless of the individual’s role, trauma may result from repeated occurrences (Carney, 2008).…
