This point is amplified by the fact that many states don’t require or offer education to become a middle school teacher. 46 states offer some sort of credential specifically for middle school teachers, however only 24 states require it (Gootman, 2007). That’s less than half of the states in the United States of America that require middle school teachers to have been trained to teach middle schoolers. This is another factor that contributes to making their job so difficult. Out of 13, 296 of New York City’s middle school teachers only 82 are certified as “middle school generalists” (Gootman, 2007). Such a small number makes it difficult to properly teach the middle schoolers what they need to learn.
