Middle School Classroom Observation

In the past month, I have been traveling to Williams Middle School in Florence, South Carolina to observe a dance educator and Coker alumni, Ashley Lesage. After the opportunity of observing twice, there were a few things I agreed with and did not agree with as far as the students and teaching methods.
September 15, 2016 was my first time observing in Ms. Lesage’s classroom. One of the first things I noticed amongst the students were their clothing attire. In a dance studio, usually an observer would see leotards, tights, leggings, t-shirt, and a tanktop. However, the students have the choice to change clothes before class begins. There were maybe two or three students wearing comfortable clothes to dance in while the rest of the class were

The mild smell of sweat, the absent sound of children’s pitter-pattering feet, the fresh, cool feeling of the wind coming through the door, and the beautiful sight of an empty area full of creative potential, makes it a perfect Sunday evening for my dance instructor. I sit in the center of the empty dance studio with my ears wide open as my dance instructor sits by my side. She is wearing her favorite black, velvet dress lined with snake patterned cuffs, elegant pieces of jewelry, and black leather boots. She sits patiently, yet eagerly as I start questioning her about her college years, and as she begins to remember some of her most memorable times. She begins to think about important lessons and experiences that she gained throughout…

Through the opportunities and challenges that the art of dance has presented over the years, I have discovered a multitude of things about myself. For starters, I have learned that I am quickly adaptable to new situations, which is mandatory for some of the incidences that have occurred on and off the stage. I have also learned that I am highly responsible for my age, demonstrated by the various positions I have been given over the years. The opportunities I have received and challenges I have faced have pushed me to become the person I am. One of my greatest responsibilities as a dancer is the opportunity to instruct the next generation of students.…

The endless rows of gray tables and little blue stools are lined up in the cafeteria like the blue lines on a piece of notebook paper. During my limited years of public elementary school, my first-grade brain would curiously observe my peers as they got their lunch, who would follow each other into the lunch line like sugar ants lining up to snatch up the food that they wanted. When they returned from their voyage, I would observe their meals and maybe compare theirs to mine. I would watch them sit down, pick at their food, and eat a couple of bites. There would be heated political discussions (sometimes with quite alarming opinions, expressed as facts, told), discussions concerning the activities in school, and occasionally a birthday or two.…

This writer continued to observe the school-age classroom for the remainder of the observation hours. The assistant teacher meandered around the room, observing students. Many of the children were still eating their snacks, and some of the children began to play while eating which led to their being scattered on the floor. The lead teacher asked them to clean up their mess, but the students left the area as soon as the lead teacher became distracted. When the lead teacher returned, she grabbed a broom and swept up the mess herself.…

While observing my Elementary teacher, I had noticed she uses the think aloud scaffold though out her lesson plans. A scaffold helps teachers model ways to solve a problem, then allows them to step away from the students to encourage them to use the learning material independently. She only helps the students when she sees them feeling overwhelmed or struggling. This helps her provide the students with chunks of information without overwhelming the students. A subject that I know I will be teaching is, reading comprehension in social studies.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…
