As students rush into class, Shannon Anderson, the White Bear South Campus Band Director, sits patiently in her office, wearing her casual band jacket with her last name on it. As students come into her office to ask her questions, she remains calm and is very friendly. “To me, caring for the students is more important than caring about the music”, says Mrs. Anderson while answering questions that range from counting music all the way to relationship advice. Mrs. Anderson’s drive for music became present while she was in band in the 6th grade. Her passion for teaching she says was different, she always loved to play school with her brother, and always wanted to become a teacher from the time she was little.…
Music I enjoy music It feels extraordinary Music’s important Band Band is amazing Blarp! Squeak! go the instruments…
As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…
Coming back from homestay and TZ has altered my views on wealth and priorities. As I went into different homes in TZ, I saw priorities shift. Some people had no cushions on their couches but had speakers running with music all day long. Others had cushions but had extremely worn sandals. I became ecstatic when a place we visited had cushions which had never happened to me before this trip.…
In my seventh grade year, I decided to join band. I had known how to play flute, and though I wasn't the best I still enjoyed it so I continued. I played in band in eighth grade, too. The directors had decided since I was so “talented” I should join marching band.…
If I wasn’t outside playing basketball with my dad, I was inside playing piano. At very young age Music became my way of expressing myself. Athletics became my way of discovering my boundaries and learning to push them. In bands and athletics I have achieved more than I could ever imagine. Through band and my passion for music, I have become multi instrumental.…
You're a strange person if you enjoy what others despise. The band room in Upper Darby High School is a room that is loved by many and, whether in the music department or not , is visited constantly from dusk to dawn. Though from an outsider’s perspective, it is very challenging to understand the reason as there are the many attributes the commoner may dislike. This room provokes so many of the human senses in a not so positive fashion, specifically: hearing, smelling, and sight. That is why I think the band room is a confusing place as to why it is so enjoyable.…
When freshmen year came, I started playing a variety of instruments including the trumpet, the saxophone, and the French horn. Although I did not continue playing these instruments as I did the other two, I learned that not everything instrument is a right fit for me and my likings. The experience taught me that everyone is unique and different, even if we were all musicians. When sophomore year came around, I started playing piano, and I loved it. I caught onto piano faster than any other instrument.…
During my 8th grade year, I had joined band searching for a chance of belonging. I had discovered, however, that band is more than just having a group of people to hang out with. Since I joined about two years later than most, practicing became a requirement. Every night I went home and rehearsed for hours, just so I wouldn’t fall further behind. About 500 blown-out reeds and two broken oboes later…
In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, citizens live without individuality, intelligence, and emotions, all of which can be connected to the absence of playable music. In the real world, everyone is affected by music that they listen to or create themselves, but it is truly underestimated. People have the distinguished ability to express their individuality through the varying types of music in the world and how they react to it. Being a musician can challenge someone’s mental and physical abilities and, if they accept the challenge, can make them more intelligent and capable members of society. Music can also cater to one’s differing emotions and help them to understand their feelings and coping methods.…
I do not know how you have felt about this situation, but the state of affairs in terms of percussion has been tormenting my thoughts for the past several months. As Tyler and Patrick are graduating, and rumors of Harley, Ana, and Chase not participating in the program circulate, it is evident that we are going to have a shortage of percussionists in the marching band when we want to further expand the roster. Because of this, I do not feel comfortable in influencing your decision of my placement in the percussion section of the 2018-19 WHS Marching Cadets. I learned a lot from you and B.T.G. throughout my time both in high school and in Woodruff, so I feel I can optimally perform where you feel I am most needed. You know my strengths and weaknesses, so I feel that I can trust you to make the decision that would have the utmost benefits for the percussion section.…
I’ve also spent many hours participating in concert band. The William Blount High School Band has not only helped me grow as a tuba player, but the band has also helped me grow as a person. I’ve learned how to interact better with people because of band; I’ve also learned how to be an effective leader by being in the William Blount High School Band. I auditioned to be a drum major at the end of my sophomore year. Thankfully, I was awarded the position of pregame drum major.…
My uncle had owned two clarinets and said that he could give me one of them, so I decided to play the clarinet. The first piece I played in the band was “Can’t take my eyes off from you”, a song sang by Franky Valli. I still can recall the excitement when I first joined rehearsal. I was so impressed and got a tingle. I felt that I finally found what I can be enthusiastic about, and playing in the band became my priority.…
These young musicians have not only become more skilled with their own instrument, but also more skilled with working with the other musicians. One of the biggest benefits that comes from being in band is gaining the social benefit of working together, as it will prepare the participants for life outside…
It became clear to me that I had a passion for music, I never took a proper music class in school. This first thing…
