Middle Manager Power Essay

I am actually a middle manager in one of the county agencies. In my line of work there are many layers of responsibilities. Some special assignments and projects by far exceed the legitimate power that was given to me and requires higher level of power and authority than my middle manager power can provide. It is also apparent to me that I have to rely and depend on others to accomplish the goals and objectives of the organization. Yes, I feel sometimes I need power being aware there are couple of faces of power, so to clarify I will attempt to describe needs for positive rather than negative aspects of power. The dilemma is how to use power I have so it servers to everyone in a positive and constructive way rather than negative or abusive way that can potentially distract and ruin empowerment of others, which almost always leads to the decrease in productivity, morale and team cohesiveness. Even more, how to increase that power without increasing …show more content…
Formal power can be Power to Reward or power to punish, also known as Coercive Power. Preferred power for me is power to reward, which most of the time will provide something that my team members need or value. I would like to lead more by coaching and rewarding a good work rather than be known for emphasizing coercive power. I don’t want my team members to fear me, because that leads to being afraid and not openly expressing their opinions, suggestions and concerns. I really don’t need “Yes Men” people, I need to be surrounded by creative competent people that will freely express their creativity and engage in brain storming and decision making processes so I can make well informed decision. I am not undermining my legitimate power, I realize how powerful force that power is, however, I need other forms of power to supplement the legitimate

Abraham Lincoln famously remarked that “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” The power belongs to those who want to get the top position in organizations with personal qualities, such as leadership, humility, ambition, etc. In this book, Jeffrey Pfeffer examines how to get the power from the individuals’ perspective to make and implement decisions by considering various situations. Also, he describes that power is a positive mechanism in managing the organizations effectively since he has also viewed it as obtained common profits or gains through collectively working together. Such opinion of him about power is diametrically opposed to our common norm that power connotes a conservative…

In almost every novel there is a person with great power. Whether it is someone who abuses that power, or uses it for good. This can be seen in the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, and through my own personal experiences. In the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, it can be seen that power is a very important aspect of leadership.…

Power is like a two-edged knife; on one side it can be a tool when used properly. If it is not, it can become the cause of irreversible damage. The English Oxford Living Dictionaries defines power as “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.” Bryant H. McGill describes power as something “all a person has, so they will protect it even unto their own destruction, for without power they have nothing”. This quote describes how in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the island society the boys create crumbles when Jack takes power and uses it for his own benefit.…

Have you ever been in a position where you can tell someone to do something, anything, and they will do it? Have you ever been in a position like this long enough to be tempted to use that power for something more than your job entails? William Golding frames the theme of his book, Lord of the Flies, after these questions, or rather the point of these questions. Power. Power gives way to advancement and togetherness, but it is also used and abused for one man or a group of people to get what they want, whatever they want, with little concern for others.…

A lot of power can sometimes be negative rather than positive and helpful. When I was in Elementary school there was a student that considered himself as a king of the school, He always took food from others and also forced them to do his homework. The idea that he had of himself was the weapon that crushed him and made him fail in everything. Meaning everyone was tired of him and with telling the counselors, he got kicked out of school. Usually, when people gain a lot of power they think they can do everything they want, but eventually they lose control of their power that makes them fail in everything over time.…

In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization to portray how having power or being powerless can cause people to be more confident and aggressive or shy and worried. In some instances power is used to put yourself above people and treat them poorly.…

People with power abuse their privilege by putting people in a constant state of fear and concern. Power should be used for positive reasons but it always ends up being used in a negative manner. For example creon from the play antigone, he puts fear in others by having a temper. Also when heh says in the play that if you try to pay any sort of respects to the dead traidor polyneices that he will have you stoned to death or starved to death.…

As a demonstration of the importance of power, let’s take Koolhaas and Urhahn (2014, 2:25) who created an idea and acted upon it, thereafter members of the community began to give their input. Shortly, the community was involved in a change to enhance their neighborhood, something that would have been obsolete if Haas and Hahn didn’t use their power. Lui (2013, 1:50) described Koolhaas and Urhahn action as civics; they possess a set of skills that allowed them to pursue goals and have others join in that pursuit. Power is obtained by educating self on power (Lui, 2013, 3:05); people must learn power, wake up and have a voice (7:10). It is apparent the power can be voluntary or involuntary.…

I believe in some leadership positions people will abuse their power to control or dominate others. Someone with power does not necessarily always make a good leader. Their attitude can affect others negatively. Power reveals people's true character whether it be positive or negative. When people feel powerful others looks very weak in their minds.…

Abuse of Power in Of Mice and Men Power is a tool, leverage and potentially a quality. Power can supply the owner with a sense of status, of being better than others. Power can be used to do many things, but it can also be used negatively. In the wrong hands, power can corrupt, destroy and abuse others, and from this abuse of power is born. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, many of the characters can be observed abusing power, to their advantage or to put others down.…

Shared power in my opinion is one of the safest kinds of power. Shared power “tends to promote a degree of self-correction that prevents abuse and victimization” (Ladd 1129). Individuals that have such shared power understand that they cannot just use it to their advantage. Take for example Dr. Valerie Walsh in the case of the Baker’s. Mr. Baker, 77 years old, was diagnosed with ALS due to progressive weakness.…

Introduction: Power comes from the ability to control other’s happiness and make others dependent on them but no person is totally dependent on another. Emerson’s Power Dependency Theory explains how power and dependency are reciprocal and how the power and dependence are kept in check through balancing operations. Power and dependence are important concepts to understand because they are something that plays out in one’s everyday relationships and one does not even recognize it. One place that the concepts of Emerson’s theory can be seen clearly is in UCSB’s Greek community – in the relationship between the community, the university administration, and each Greek organization’s members.…
