Middle Class Family

My family would be classified as a middle class family to most. Growing up I thought we were poor, no where near to being middle class. My parents struggled to keep food on the table, clothes on our back, a house over our heads, and to keep the light on. I saw them stress on how little money they had to buy food with after paying the rent and all our other bills. Some nights the only light in sight would be the flickering of the flame on the candles used to keep the house from being pitch black due to not having enough money to pay the PG&E bill. When I was in fifth grade my family struggled greatly. My dad, our main provider, was diagnosed with cancer and had to have an emergency surgery and was out of work for a long period of

Nowadays, it is very hard to be classify on the middle class compare to the early 1970's. Today's median-earning family is making a lot more money that their parents did a generation ago. The family in the middle class brings home two paychecks with income $75.600 . It means all the growth in family income came from adding a second earner. The story is all about overconsumption, families really are blowing their paychecks on designer clothes and restaurant meals than their parents did a generation earlier.…

While this may be true, I highly doubt that my parents would classify themselves in this category. I believe that the cause of this lack of confidence in middle class families comes from the terrible condition of the economy and debt we are in, which makes everyone, even wealthier families, to doubt their assets. This confusion continues in the media, which is shown by The New York Times and Pew Research center having such drastically different reports on the middle class. All in all I think that it is difficult to distinguish who is in the middle class because people will have different definitions depending on their own personal financial situations. The one thing that “middle class” families can agree on, however, is that even if the data seems to be more promising, the current economic status has hurt all ends of the…

When one thinks about themselves, their first instinct is to determine what stereotypes they classify themselves under. Usually they classify themselves as a higher class; for example if they are socially poor, they may say they are middle class. The denial that occurs can now affect their lives here on out. We begin to learn these tactics at an early age without much knowledge of it. Whatever class you fall under one should never let that stereotype define who you are as a person or your character.…

When he talked about his family growing up, he also thought they were middle-class. What this shows is that the definition of the middle-class is a large range. Based off this interview, I think the main differences between the lower-middle class and the upper-middle class is the ability to have purchases that luxuries or not necessary such as vacations. As my dad mentioned before, he never felt poor because he had a home, clothes, and food when it was needed. In comparison to my immediate family and my dad’s family, I would say that we both had good social mobility because both families gave their children the opportunities to receive a higher education at a college /…

For this weeks article readings, I felt that they all tied in together a little bit. How Rich Countries Lift up the Poor, Middle Class Shrinks further as More Fall Out Instead of Climbing out and The One Percent. Roughly it is stated that middle class income is starting at $35,000 to $100,000 for a family of four. I have to disagree with that because it is such a big gap. I feel that anyone making over $85,000 should be considered upper middle.…

Middle Class: The American middle-class is anyone who comfortably (though surely, not without hardship at times) affords life’s necessities. These include: shelter, sustenance, clothing and transportation. It can be used as a label for those in the vast socio-economic group which is comfortably above the poverty level, but not within reach of say, the top ten-percent. Many people believe the middle-class shrunk as interest rates on mortgages rose, making it difficult for people to make payments and hold onto their homes. African-American: Any people of African ancestry who have been born in America as well as those who have or were forced to settled in America and who have made a home in America.…

What we consider middle class in the United States is certainly not middle class compared to the rest of the world; it is considered upper class. Our social issues are far greater in other areas of the globe. We must also consider the fact that we live the lives that we do because of where we live. If people in the United States were to live a more than comfortable lifestyle, it is because they have more opportunities compared to the people living in poorer countries in Africa. Although the lives we lead may differ from those in poorer countries, it does not mean that we are not connected to them.…
