Middle And High School Students Participate In Sports

Decent Essays
Should middle and high school students have to meet a grade requirement to participate in sports? On my opinion, I think students from middle and high school should have to meet a grade requirement to participate in sports. I agree to this term because middle and high school students should maintain a certain grade point average to play a sport. I do believe that middle and high school students should have to meet a grade requirement to be able to participate in a sports team. For example, imagine yourself as an athlete who has just graduated high school.
What will people think of you if you received poor grades? Coaches look for students with good grades, not only playing ability to make sure the student is doing well in school. Students

In recent years, many youth athletic organizations have decided that trophies should be given out for participation, rather than athletic ability. This policy is supposed to promote skill building and equality among all adolescent athletes. While the players may be building skills on an equal playing field, they are also being allowed to believe that they deserve to be recognized for giving their best effort, when in reality that is not the case. Although initiated with good intentions, the policy teaches children that simply participating and showing up is enough, no real effort is needed to be rewarded. While the University of Denver’s developmental psychology professor, Susan Harter, does understand how these trophies can be beneficial,…

The list could go on and on about what is wrong with high school sports in this generation. It starts when they’re young, parent coaches who only qualify because they played the specific sport when they were younger. That is brought into high school, with their child playing the same sport they “coach”, not getting to experience anything other than what their parent’s knowledge and what they could tell them. I’m not saying all high school athletes who are coached by their parents aren’t going to get any better, but I am saying that if you are going to hire a coach for a program, make sure they are more qualified than just being a parent in the district or having a little playing experience. High school is the preparation stage for college, both academically and athletically.…
