Communion & Continuity in Middle Adulthood
In the first video, a middle aged, married mother reflects on her early adult phase as being egocentric and self-centered. She is single and considers herself to be a “Type A” personality with a diversified professional. She is also a diabetic who aims for healthy behavior when dealing with her illness.
When applying generativity, which is referred to as the “motive or need that can be filled through one’s vocation or avocations, through child rearing or through community service” (Broderick and Blewitt, 2015, p. 438), it is evident this woman is a caretaker, but in a different form. As a teacher, she contributes to society and serves her maternal instincts as well. Further, her love and attention for her nieces and nephews are an indicator of her goal to leave a legacy behind. In other words, “those who are successful during this phase will feel that they are contributing to the world by being active in their home and community” (Cherry, 2005). In this case, this woman has achieved her goal of generativity during her life span.
