This report reflects on the different aspects of human development. It primarily stresses the importance of communion and continuity in middle adulthood; the different adaptive processes during a person’s life span; the importance of generativity in a person’s life as she moves through a new stage in life. Finally, three questions are posed in order to assimilate an individual’s previous experiences and how these experiences affected their personal lives.
Communion & Continuity in Middle Adulthood
In the first video, a middle aged, married mother reflects on her early adult phase as being egocentric and self-centered. However, as she moved into the middle adulthood interim, she seems preoccupied with the future and that of her children. Her primary focus is her family, especially her children. She wants to ensure a safe and happy

She is single and considers herself to be a “Type A” personality with a diversified professional. She is also a diabetic who aims for healthy behavior when dealing with her illness.
When applying generativity, which is referred to as the “motive or need that can be filled through one’s vocation or avocations, through child rearing or through community service” (Broderick and Blewitt, 2015, p. 438), it is evident this woman is a caretaker, but in a different form. As a teacher, she contributes to society and serves her maternal instincts as well. Further, her love and attention for her nieces and nephews are an indicator of her goal to leave a legacy behind. In other words, “those who are successful during this phase will feel that they are contributing to the world by being active in their home and community” (Cherry, 2005). In this case, this woman has achieved her goal of generativity during her life span.

Throughout this paper I will be writing about developmental psychology, which is the study of how and why humans develop over time. Humans develop both physically and cognitively over their lifespan from infancy, toddlerhood, teen, and to adulthood. At full length I will be explaining the stages and factors that play a role in developmental psychology. Maturation is the major key of growing from childhood to adulthood and it starts at infancy.…

From what I remember about my life as a youth, in terms of socialization, was an exposure to both concerted cultivation and the accomplishment of self-growth as explained by Annette Lareaus study of Unequal Childhoods: class, Race, and Family Life. The reason I feel I was exposed to both is because I feel my mom attempted to give my brother and I a concerted cultivation life of structure, schedule, and activities but there were road blocks that didn’t allow her to implement this teaching in prime years of my development. Lareaus talked about the big effect that a parent’s education level plays on the child’s life. Growing up I only had a mother and although she didn’t make it past her sophomore year of high school she later enlisted in the…

According to Annette Laureau, sociologists and writer of “Unequal Childhoods”, asserts that the working class and poor class parents use natural growth whereas middle class and upper middle class parents use concerted cultivation. She doesn’t imply that one style is better than the other, but that the styles are different based on their social classes. Parents are here to steer their children in the right direction. Concerted Cultivation is more prone to following footsteps of what was taught, Natural Growth allows the children to be more prone to make mistakes and lose their path. I agree with Annette Laureau (Unequal Childhoods, p. 2) when she says that “concerted cultivation… causes a sense of entitlement which plays an especially important role in institution settings…”…

week four's video covers Adult and health development, which is comprised of three sections, early, middle, and late adulthood. I will focus mainly on the physical changes, rather than those which are social constructs. Early adult hood generally comprises from our late teens, until early to mid thirties. In early adulthood our bodies are at our prime, and we are generally healthy as long as we eat a balanced diet, and get regular exercise. In middle adulthood Ages 40-50 our bodies' aging becomes more apparent, Our metabolism slows down significantly, making us retain more fat, especially around the waist, abdominal fat is indicative of being at risk for many chronic diseases and disorders, page 103 in our textbook shows that there…

Intergenerational Interview Paper Introduction The person that I interviewed was my mother, Catherine Scurlark. I thought I knew everything there was to know about her, but after this interview I feel like I have a much better perception about who she actually is and how the impact of events has shaped her into the woman that she is today. My mom is 50 years of age – according to Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development, that puts her in the middle adulthood (generativity vs. stagnation) category.…

Given the human and technological resources available, parents and other caretakers adapt the customs and practices of child rearing – inherited and adapted ways of nurturing, entertaining, educating, and protecting the child – to the ecological and cultural settings in which they live (Super & Harkness, 1986). The most prominent caregiving figure in Keon’s life is his Grandma Grace, a 55 year-old social worker. Although it is customary for American children to have their mothers as primary caregiver, Jada’s (Keon’s mother and Grace’s daughter) prohibits her from fulfilling this role, and Grandma Grace fills this void. Grace exhibits behaviors that aim to nurture (working in order to provide for her family’s needs), entertain (allowing Keon to engage in outdoor play), educate (showing awareness of the academic program at Keon’s school and giving him time to do his homework), and protect (setting a curfew and limiting his interaction within their dangerous neighborhood) Keon.…

Erik Erikson, the developer of the psychosocial theory approach to human development, believed that people follow a sequence of stages of development from birth to death. “These development stages include tasks that result from biological forces and age related social or cultural expectations (Ashford & LeCroy, 2010, p.99)”. Within his psychological theory, Erikson identified eight psychosocial stages of human development which are equipped with “appropriate physical, emotional, and cognitive tasks that the individuals must master in the struggle to the demands of the social environment (Ashford & LeCroy, 2010, p.99-100)”. The eight stages include infancy (trust vs mistrust); early childhood (autonomy vs. shame, doubt); play age (initiative…

According to Erickson, there are eight life stages from infancy until late adulthood and each one is characterized by distinguished psychosocial events. In Erickson’s view development continues throughout the life span and a person needs to solve a crisis at each stage to attain a healthy personality. Furthermore, conflicting possibilities and outcomes characterize each crisis that needs to be solved. The first crisis, “trust versus mistrust”- birth to one year, is based on the reliability of care and affection the baby receives from the primary caregiver, while the next three crises, “autonomy versus shame”- one to three years, “initiative versus guilt”- three to six years, and “industry versus inferiority”- six to twelve years, rely on the ability of caretakers to support and encourage children to develop a sense of independence, social skills, and acquire culturally valued abilities. The four stages mentioned above constitute the groundwork for adult personality.…

The world today is a dangerous place, and with that comes plenty of worry. Most parents today spend their free-time anxiously wondering if their child is okay, and if the choices they are making are too. This is hard, but nothing compares to the harsh journey of growing up- your childhood. Where adults have already seen it all and already have their hands on life, children have not. Most adults know how to handle difficult situations and fix their mistakes, a quality that kids have to learn through experience.…

Daniel Levinson’s “Seasons of Life” theory consists of seven stages. However, for this prompt, the focus will be on the fifth stage: mid-life transition. This usually happens between the ages of 40 to 45, and is sometimes classified as one of crisis. During this stage, a person, whether it be a man or woman, begins to evaluate or reevaluate their life. Levinson states, during this phase there is a lot of soul searching and reflection done throughout this stage (Schoolworkhelper Editorial Team, 2016).…

Having how structural barriers in the emerging adulthood stage can impact an individual’s late adulthood stage. Because of certain life changing opportunities missed. Older Adulthood usually know what they want in life while emerging adults are at that in between stage in their life. I expected an adult in their late adulthood stage to have different views on love, parenting and education than an emerging adult. I thought the large age gap, would play a big factor in how both adult view the world, instead the views are somewhat similar.…
