Middle Adulthood: The Psychological Conflict Of Middle Childhood

Erickson believed that the combination of adult expectations and children’s’ drive toward mastery sets the stage for the psychological conflict of middle childhood: industry versus inferiority, which is resolved positively when experiences lead children to develop a sense of competence at useful skills and tasks. As stated before, Tyler is the center of his family. His siblings rely on him to navigate the family and school and he is often put in the position of peacemaker between his parents. Even though Tyler is mature for his age, he manages to enjoy being a nine-year-old kid. When asked to describe himself, Tyler’s answers reflect what he thinks of himself in comparison with his peers and the expectations of others.

Tyler: It’s alright, you can do something else. Notions of personal choice enhances children’s moral understanding. Tyler is given the opportunity to choose his own clothes the night before school. Many times his mother questions his choices but Tyler sticks to his choices. He has his own sense of style and mannerisms. It is important to Tyler to have SWAG. He spends time watching TV shows of children older than himself and interprets their attitudes and style as normal. His mother limits how far he expresses his interpretation. During our conversation Tyler and I spoke of his rights and the rights of other people. He also has a strong desire to maintain a fair society. Tyler believes all people have certain rights and that no one should take their rights from them.
Me: When do you plan your clothes?
Tyler: I choose my clothes the night before school.
Me: Rights are what you believe you are entitled to. Such as the right to be safe, healthy, and go to school. What other rights do you think you should have?
Tyler: Right to be respected, to be yourself, and not to be hurt.
Me: Do you think other children have rights?
Tyler: Yes.

Tyler: I would play basketball with kids in the neighborhood near the white house.
Me: What would you do Wednesday?
Tyler: I would pay the bills then go to the movie theater.
Me: What would you do on Thursday?
Tyler: I would have some free time.
Me: You only have a week to be the president.
Tyler: I would stop kids from growing up so fast. I would tell the foster people to be nice to the kids.
Me: What would you do on Friday?
Tyler: Since I can’t have the day off, I would tell everyone to have good math school and good school.
Me: What would you do on Saturday?
Tyler: That’s my off day.
Me: What would you do on Sunday?
Tyler: I would make sure homes are stable. Children recognize God has supernatural powers not available to human. Tyler attends church with his family every Sunday. He is active in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. He says he enjoys listening to stories about God and Jesus. He has been baptized as a Christian believer and likes to read his bible.
