In ancient China, intellectual schools played important roles in consolidating the government of a strong state and shaping the way people read, think, talk and live. If I were the emperor living in the mid Western Han dynasty, I would like to promote Confucianism as the main intellectual school to generalize in my country by considering the present domestic and foreign situations and different views of Confucianism, Legalism, and Daoism.
At mid Western Han Dynasty, Xiongnu, who formed as a nomadic tribe, is one of the biggest enemies of Han dynasty. Xiongnu kept on opposing against the Han Dynasty and invaded the border area frequently. At early Western Han dynasty, the chaos caused by wars between Han dynasty and Xiongnu had affected the economy badly. Because in early Han dynasty, people’s life and the social economy was destroyed by the long period of wars. Governors need to earn some time to recover its economy and social structure. Daoism claimed that emperors should govern by doing nothing that is against nature. In other word, people should go along with the laws of natural. Everything in the world will progress on its own way without human intervention. With Daoism’ suggestion, Han dynasty obtained time to recuperate and multiply its population. Also, it lay a solid foundation for the development of mid Western Han dynasty. Indeed, “Non Action” played an important role during the early Han dynasty because it provided a stable political environment to rebuild the social order and the national economy.
