A microaggression is a statement that is generally directed toward people of color and women that is both stunning and sudden that can either happen with or without conscious awareness. However, most of the time microaggressions occur without the individual consciously recognizing them. Critical Race and Conflict Theory Critical race theory focuses on the fact that racism is a normal part of American society rather than an anomaly (Marx, 2008). It is something so entrenched in society and the institutions that uphold it, that it seems normal to people in the American culture (Harrell & Pezeshkian, 2008). This can be seen in the use of microaggressions. Microaggerssions are brief everyday nonverbal and verbal slights sent to people of color unconsciously by white people, who do not understand the message they are communicating (Harrell & Pezeshkian, 2008).…

Macroaggression to me means the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental looks, movements, and comments whether they are intentional or unintentional, that communicates a negative messages towards a person based solely upon their appearance. Macroaggressions happen on day to day bases because people construct stereotypes that affect individuals like me because of the length of my hair or the color of my skin. I work as a cashier at a clothing store for women, and I am constantly targeted by these women because the color of my skin. Once day I was put on the register to assistances my fellow co-worker; however even though her line was filled with customers the did not step to my register because the mere fact that I look like a different race that could not communicate them, which affects me as a person that's trying to help that individual. I think these article made me think that the language and nonverbal communication is constantly evolving so we as people have to become less egoistic to our verbal and nonverbal expression, and evolve with our language so that microaggressions abuse can…

The book Blindspot and the concept of hidden biases and stereotypes affect my hometown community, my new college community and also the country and the world around me. As I began reading through the pages, I was surprised how relevant this information was to my daily life. Now that I reflect, I can’t think of a situation where judgments or misconceptions relating to the book haven’t popped into my mind. Stereotypes and unconscious biases are around everyone constantly. I was raised in a fairly non-diverse small town.…

I will be looking at this acronym as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + identities that do not necessarily fall within these categories.…

Colleges campuses, once a beacon for progressive reforms, stimulating discussions, and engaging debates, recently have been scrubbed clean of language that may be perceived as offensive or hurtful to minority students through the use of speech codes. Speech codes seek to protect the mental health of college students, and punish harassment that occurs on campus, however because of their ambiguous wording, they have been stretched to censor unpopular opinions and important discussions. By protecting students from all words or displays that may cause offense, colleges are not adequately preparing students for life in the working world, and inadvertently presenting students with a sheltered and unchallenged world view. In an attempt to create “safe…

Having grown up as Asian American I am no stranger to microaggressions. There are many stereotypes associated with being asian and i've been called most if not all of them at least once. One microaggression that I have deeply resonated with is the fact that i get the question where am I from or are you chinese when I tell them I'm American. This irks me because can anyone other than white people be Americans. There seems to be a certain representation on what an American is and that includes looking a certain way.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

Modern racism is a form of prejudice; it surfaces in understated ways, when socially acceptable, and easily justified. Implicit racism presents as an unconscious negative reaction, making judgments about someone of a different race or ethnicity than one’s own. The divide between racial and ethnic groups tends to be more extensive and may promote stronger feelings of hostility, fear, and distrust than the segmentation based on gender, or age ect. One aspect that keeps negative feelings strong is the relative lack of interaction between people of different racial or ethnic…

Microevolution allows us to see a small scale of evolution over a short period of time. To visually see and test evolution we need organisms that adapt quickly and have short life spans. Fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, are model organisms in order to gather as much information within a short period of time. Fruit flies have a life span of about 2 weeks, and are low maintenance, making it easy to see several generations. (Varga, S. J., Qi, C., Podolsky, E., & Lee, D , 2014)…
