After spending nearly every waking minute in her own home town of Melbourne, Carmen and her family finally decided to explore somewhere overseas. Somewhere exotic. Somewhere different. Vietnam and Malaysia. Not only was she looking forward to the rich culture and traditions, but also the school life and the living conditions.
At last, the plane boarded its final passengers. Carmen and her family rushed to their seats in excitement, preparing for the long flight overseas. But what adventures lay ahead? The thought of it made her tingle with excitement.
However, when she arrived, not everything had looked the way she described. She felt different, and it was not just a foreign place, it was a completely new world. On the following day as their family slowly rowed across the calm water, Carmen's thoughts just revolved around the barely thriving villagers who lived in shacks along the water front. She felt sorry for the people. The village was on water. Houses, shops, and even schools! The water was very dirty and the people who lived in the village bathed in the murky liquid. Carmen's mum feared that they drank the water so she volunteered to give a family a bottle of clean drinking water.
Every family owned a boat and this was their only way of travelling within the village. She entered a school and watched as the children learnt, eagerly listening to their teacher, who inconveniently wrote on a blackboard. The class was crammed with children at small wooden desks.
