The author identifies the “Microaggression Process Model” and each of the five steps that occurs when one receives a microaggression. Phase 1 is the incident in which the microaggression occurs, and can happen in subtle, blatant, or within symbolic incidents by the environment or an individual/individuals (69). These can also occur in verbal or nonverbal forms (71). Phase 2 involves the questioning of the incident, in which the victim wonders if the assault was intentional and if bigotry actually existed within the aggression (72). Many people often try to justify the microaggression, or deny it, as if fearing the truth.…
Title IX: How do gender roles affect athletics? Throughout the semester, the course Gender and Communication has made me think in ways I never have. In this course, I was able to see things through a different lens. Since the course was seminar based, we were fortunate enough to hear from students from with many different backgrounds.…
The second speech I chose to critique was the male student’s speech on police brutality. This student’s main point in his speech was to argue enforcing regulations and training onto officers will and must stop police brutality. He was able to follow Monroe’s outline well while presenting his speech. In addition he used good examples of methods that can be used to prevent future police brutality. For example, he stated police officers should be forced to wear body cameras, and given proper training on a regular basis.…
The topic I chose is ObamaCare (ACA), and the effect it has on low income families. The functionalist perspective of healthcare is, good health and effective medical care. These both are essential for having a functioning society. Most of society shares a common set of values, such as beliefs and expectations.…
Explain what happened in your past that moved you, or allowed you to move, from one stage to the next to get you where you are today. As I became knowledgeable and expose to different situations, I realize that not all cultures are the same. Although there are a huge factors to consider when relating to racism not everyone behaves in that manner. I have worked in environment that has shown me that African American can be treated fairly.…
Mindy (Mytien) Nguyen Professor Montagne Anthropology 185 03 November 2015 Innate or Learned? Aggression refers to an array of behaviors that may have consequences in both physical and psychological harm to oneself, others, or objects in the environment. It can take a variety of forms that include physical, verbal, mental, and emotional. As aggression progresses in human behavior from adolescent to adult, we often wonder if these qualities are innate in humans or if it is a learned behavior.…
The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
The movement of the use of a clean vocabulary on college campuses is at an all-time high with students becoming distressed and offended at certain words and even some students experiencing micro aggressions from others, this is an arising issue because these students are the future and many more obstacles will emerge in the real world. “Even joking about macroaggressions can be seen as an aggression, warranting punishment “(Lukianoff, Haidt). In the article, “The Coddling of the American Mind”, by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, use statistics and examples to evoke concern about the rise in mental health in college students due to trigger warnings and the actions of micro aggressions.…
Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…
When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…
A Theme That I was able to see and understand from reading was Student Stress. After reader The Overachievers it change my viewpoint about Student Stress. Stress is something that many students have because they're worried about what school they're going or they might not get their project done on time. This is a problem many overachieves faced while there were growing up and many faced even once they got to college. Stress is something that isn’t easy to overcome and there are some people in the overachiever that I particularly feel that their stressed really spoke out to me.…
How did you relate to the readings, videos and forum discussions? I related to the readings about cultural and linguistic competence as a future health care provider. I saw how my knowledge of these topics could affect the care and well being of real people. One hypothetical that struck me was about a nurse practitioner choosing a cheaper and less effective medication for a black patient. The nurse had done this with the well-meaning intention of saving a poor person from the bills that come with a higher level of health care, not realizing that the patient was of a high socioeconomic status (Hall and Fields).…
The various guest speakers that shared their stories and life experiences with the class allowed for a deeper understanding of the concepts discussed, but also the provided a much greater significance overall. While the idea of oral tradition was analyzed through various readings as well as in lecture, hearing certain stories such as the reason behind Rosie giving her song to Edosdi, really helped me withhold a stronger connection with the idea. Growing up, I loved hearing stories about what people have gone through and experienced so by incorporating the stories of real people who dealt with residential schools like Murray and his wife kept me intrigued. Furthermore, I was also brought up with several stories from my parents and relatives so these presentations were very close to my heart. Guest speakers also provided a dissimilar perspective on the topics than what the professor or Stephanie had taught in tutorial.…
The one aspect that I found interesting is the client/student level of advocacy. I found this particular aspect interesting because of the approach that the counselor takes during this level of advocacy, which is really powerful. The counselor really digs deep to get to know the client from all levels. Therefore, the couselor can understand and serve the client better. More importantly, self-advocacy is vital in this level of advocacy.…
