Disney realized that even though his Mickey Mouse cartoons were extrememly sucessful, the company couldn’t thrive off that success forever. He needed a format that he could develop complex stories and characters. Disney set out to make the first full-length animated film, an idea that was foreign at this time. It was beleieved that the funny cartoons before the main feature would be boring if they were longer than 10 minutes. Disney sought out a fairytale, he wanted to bring magic to the real world that no live-action film ever could. By the Summer of 1934, Disney had strong structured plans for his “Feature Symphony” project, or what is well-known today as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney and his crew spent endless hours in the animation studio, working at fullspeed to finish the feature, but they were met with the complexity of drawing the human anatomy. Stepping in a new direction for animation, Disney’s animators took classes and made shorts with human characters to practice for the feature. It took until the Spring of 1936 to have Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in full swing. Disney spent a lot of time working on the precise details of his project, especially when it came to music. Disney really wanted the music to be different than what other movies had already featured. He needed the music to weave into the story, it couldn’t have random bursts of song. He needed the music to perfectly represent the characters, for instance in the Dwarf sequence, he auditioned countless of people to find the perfect yodel. The tiny details didn’t stop there. Live actors were casted to adopt the roles of the human characters so that the animators would be able to animate humans better in their photostats. The color of Snow White’s famously pale skin was still challenging the talented and skilled animators. When the cels came back from inking she looked sickly and anemic. On every single cel, one of the
