Socialisation is the process of learning to be a functioning member of society. Through this we learn the norms and laws in society. Primary socialisation is the process of how we learn the norms which society define as expected behaviours, roles which are the patterns of behaviour that are expected in society and values which are about beliefs in what is considered to be right or wrong., we usually learn these through our family. Feminists believe that within society women have less power and influence than what men have. Females have had to learn that they have a lower position within the family structure. In relation to the case study feminists would believe that Michelle has been socialised into her role as a female and a mother. Within Michelle’s family it is clear that there has been cases of oppression, subordination and patriarchy within the family home from Stephen to Michelle. As Stephen has shown this by taking control within the family home, as he believed that he held more power than Michelle. As there is an inequality of power with Michelle and Stephen, this will be affect Michelle’s opportunities and life chances in the house but also out in society as well. Michelle may start to believe that maybe men do hold more power than women do and they can do whatever they want. Michelle may also start to believe that all men have these views which would cause Michelle to start to have prejudices opinions about men from the result of Stephens’s behaviour to Michelle.
