Spring is about simple, easy changes that shake off winter’s chill and adds instant cheer. But ‘springing up’ the interior of your home takes experience along with an eye for design on what to do and not do. Austin interior designer Michelle Thomas has both the experience and the designer’s eye that comes together in her concept of keep it bright and light for spring.
“A good tip is to change the light bulbs from florescent to LED, and add some color with a lamp or lampshade,” says Thomas. “A white lampshade can transform your whole room interjecting airiness.”
Refreshing for spring can be as cheap as rearranging the livingroom furniture making it feel like a whole, new space. Updating the pillows in lighter weight fabrics, like cotton and linen, with floral patterns or stripes, and in coral and blue, or teal and lime green makes the area lighter and bright. Thomas advises using light-weight fabric drapery too, plus switching to a roller shade of woven fabric that allows light to enter but reduces the glare.

But like many people that come here for a visit, Michelle decided to stay, so she relocated in 2006 working for several design firms before starting her firm in 2013. Thomas has earned three ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Awards in the Rising Star Category. She is active in the local design community chairing the Austin ASID Design Community in 2012-2013 and Design Excellence Chair. She and her team have completed projects throughout Texas, as well as in Florida and Missouri. Designing in Austin is unique though since there is no set style Thomas says, and clients are willing to take more risks, where people in other states favor a traditional
