Michelle Rhee is an American educator and an extreme advocate for education reform. This video we watched named the Education of Michelle Rhee is a very informative video in which Michelle Rhee attempted to fix the broken school system in Washington D.C. Michelle Rhee may not have been liked by many people because of her approach, but I personally agree with her perspectives. She had an autocratic view towards issues and also had tough reforms but I think sometimes someone with strong viewpoints are needed. Her no excuses policy which meant if you weren’t working hard enough then you had to be fired, is something teachers and principals didn’t necessarily agree with. But with that new evaluation in place if teachers weren’t doing well, Ms. Rhee wanted them terminated instead of trying to see why the teacher and the students were having issues.
I don’t agree with her firing practices when she hired more than 900 new teachers during one summer but once discovering there wasn’t enough money in the budget, she had to lay off over 200 teachers. Instead of compromising to cutting summer school to keep some teachers employed she told principals to lay off teachers that were ineffective. So teachers who were employed for 20+ years were laid off, because Rhee didn’t care much about seniority.
I personally dislike standardized tests because from kindergarten to 12th grade my teachers seemed to be trained to teach me how to pass a test. I don’t think there should be such a big importance of passing a test to measure how students are doing. Some students as myself don’t like the pressure of standardized tests. My principal in high school was accused of telling teachers to change grades in order for her schools to look better. It is ironic because both my principal and Michelle Rhee were innocent, after the investigation was
