Michelle Philgreen: The Positive Impact Of Music Education

When you think of education, what do you think of? Math, Science, and Reading? What about Music Education? The positive impact music education has on other subject areas in school makes music education important for the overall impact on children. Singing and dancing all in all makes the student more set up for success in school and in other areas of their lives as well. As a show choir director and dance teacher you become the role model for young children and that’s exactly what Michelle Philgreen is. Having the commitment that she has, helps children with their skills and abilities with singing and dancing, helping them find a passion for it, and making her a hero to the students’ and the community as a whole.

A terrific trait for a dance teacher is the ability to motivate the dancers to strive to do the best that they can. By challenging them, they are able to reach their full potential and have their own successes along the way (Suzanne). Michelle is able to do this through her success and gives the students a way of knowing that they have a dance teacher that know what she’s doing. She is a dance instructor/owner of the rec center dance in Manchester and has been doing this for over 38 years. Michelle states, “There is a lot more to being a dance instructor than people think and it is really hard work. Instructing dancers that are all very different can be a bit tricky, but being able to see the smiles on the kids faces and knowing they look up to me makes it all worth it.” She started off very small with only thirty dancer, but it rapidly developed and was promoted to one hundred seventy dancers. It has become a true success and has been awarded “Best Dance Studio” on the KCRG A-LIST 2 years in a row. Doing all of the things she does has influenced many students in many ways to continue with singing and dancing, for example, three students that she taught now have their own successful dance studios because of the teaching of Michelle. Also several of her students have gone into the entertainment field. Michelle states, “I’m a huge promoter of doing what you want to do and going after your dreams no matter how far they seem.” This has inspired multiple students to follow their dreams and be the people they are
