Reminiscing on the day after the 2008 election when former President, Barack Obama had won the presidential election. I was in the fifth grade when my mother was educating me on the importance of his triumph. She told me that representation was important in the black community. As I watched the inauguration, former First Lady, Michelle Obama had absolutely captured my attention. She walked with such poise and delicacy. As I stared at the television screen my eleven-year-old self knew I wanted to be just like Michelle Obama.
Michelle LaVaugh Robinson was born on January 17, 1964 in Chicago Illinois. During her time as First Lady she advocated for poverty and proper nutrition. In 2010, Michelle Obama campaigned for Healthy-Hunger Free Kids which had provisions to enhance the nutritional value of school lunches, including vending machines. Her public health, Let’s Move campaign also encouraged Americans to make healthy eating choices and engage in exercise. She is also the first, First Lady to obtain two Ivy League degrees. The speeches were always eloquently delivered and filled with positivity. At President Obama’s farewell speech, the beautiful words he described his wife and the powerful use of pathos made me emotional. Not only was she an exceptional wife and mother to her children, she made young black girls and boys believe that we too, can be great and destined for success despite being a minority. Being Afro-Latina, I hope one day both girls and boys can look up to me in the same manner and let their hard work, motivation, and discipline speak for itself; and want to become someone helpful in society to help serve others in any small act of
