“Michelle” and Romeo & Juliet are about males and their enthusiastic response of affection towards a female character. “Michelle” is a song by The Beatles, an English rock band. A male character is expressing his love towards a beautiful female who is not fluent in English, so he uses French. He longs for her to understand what he’s saying and he repeats the French phrase he knows, hoping that one day she’ll knows he loves her. Romeo & Juliet is a play by Shakespeare, an English actor, playwright, and poet. Romeo, a Montague, falls in love with Juliet, a Capulet. The Capulets and Montagues have had conflict between each family for ages, but Romeo has found the need to profess his love towards Juliet and her beauty verbally. The male narrator was singing to Michelle when he proclaimed,”Michelle, ma belle… I love you I love you I love you” (Doc. 1). The male narrator acts as an example of males expressing their love towards someone they cannot have by speaking about them. He does not have any way of letting her know he loves her because they do not understand each other, so he resorted into verbally expressing it to her, hoping that one day she will understand his declaration of attraction. Romeo in Romeo & Juliet expressed his love for someone he cannot be with by speaking about her. Romeo was speaking to a servingman when he he professed,”Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! (Romeo & Juliet. 1.5.47)” Romeo exemplifies a male expressing his attraction towards someone he cannot have through speaking because he speaks about her beauty with admiration, although he can never be with her. Romeo in Romeo & Juliet is also an example of a male expressing his love for someone he cannot have by speaking about how he fell in love with her.
