Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in Florence, Italy. Since Florence was the center of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo was not discouraged to become an artist. In fact at the age of thirteen, his father had let him become an apprentice to a painter. His talent was noticed by the Medici family, somewhat rulers at the time, and he studied in their sculpture gardens. He then went on to make many other famous sculptures in his life, such as the Sistine Chapel Ceiling.
