This sculpture is made of marble, specifically the marble that Michelangelo picked out because he envisioned the marble to already represent the sculpture, he only needed his tools to make it come to life. This sculpture is so unique because of the proportion, and how the measurements are not accurately to scale. Jesus is represented unnaturally smaller, whereas, his mother Mary is represented unnaturally larger. This is so because Michelangelo was faced with a problem of how Mary could hold her fully grown son effortlessly in her arms. This was made possible by Mary’s draping garments that hide her oversized body. Along with being dramatically oversized, Mary also appears to look too young to have a 33 year old son, perhaps this was to show her inner virtue of youth.
