Michelangelo depicts David between a state of choice and action. David appears to be staring off into the distance, eyes locked with another being, just about to move forward and engage with it. It was later revealed that Michelangelo set David’s intense and stern gaze in the direction of Rome where the home of Cardinal Giovanni de Medici was. Even more this glare was meant as a warning towards the Cardinal and it furthered cemented David’s role as the symbolic hero of resistance against overwhelming odds for Florence. He was given special permission by the church to investigate the dead bodies, although his body suffered as result of close contact with them. This knowledge is seen in the statue of David on David’s hands, torso, arms, and legs. Any observer can see the careful detail of veins, bones, and muscles of this massive sculpture. Michelangelo created what came to be known as the ideal human body per say. An onlooker of this practically perfect piece of art can imagine themselves in David’s place, with their own slingshot and rocks in their hands ready to battle. Many onlookers during the time that Michelangelo released the statue related to it heavily despite its nudity. That’s why it was so important and powerful to Florence, it held immense political and religious connotation to it. Florence was a cultural hub of various art forms like Classical art, thanks to the Medici family. Michelangelo was raised among the Medici so it’s very safe to say he was influenced by Classical art. One can search for classical art on the internet and make a comparison on their own. The Greeks and Romans loved the human body and definition of male form, Michelangelo absorbed this and surpassed beyond anyone’s expectation.
