Michelangelo left Medici’s court and returned to his father’s house. In the next months, Michelangelo carved the wooden crucifix that he promised to the church in exchange to study human biology. In between the years of 1493 to 1494 (Michelangelo was 18 in 1493 and 19 in 1494 during this time) Michelangelo had purchased a large block of marble and carved and chiseled a large statue of Hercules, but was later on sent to France and eventually disappeared sometime circa 18th century. During the ending of 1494, the political state of Florence seemed more tranquil and relaxed. So, Michelangelo moved back to Florence since it was more relaxed and because the city wasn’t in danger anymore. Shockingly, Michelangelo didn’t receive any commissions or orders from the new city government ruled by Savonarola. So, Michelangelo went back to the employment of the Medici. While Michelangelo was in Florence for a half year, he worked on two mini sculptures a child who was St. John the Baptist and an asleep Cupid. A member of the Medici family,Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, told Michelangelo to make the statues look ancient and buried and to give it to Rome so it can pass as ancient work, so it will sell better. Lorenzo sold the artwork to a Cardinal named Raffaele Riario and he discovered it was a fake, but he did enjoy the detailing of the artwork and the standard of it. So Raffaele Riario invited Michelangelo to come to Rome and Michelangelo accepted because of the success he had in selling abroad and also because of the conservative Florentine condition. Now that the Statue of David was completed, Michelangelo’s next commission was to paint the Battle of Cascina. Michelangelo was also ordered to paint a “Holy Family” for Angelo Doni’s wife, Maddalena Strozzi as a gift, this painting was called the Doni Tondo. In the year 1505 Michelangelo went back to Rome because a pope, Pope Julius ll, had just got elected and invited Michelangelo back to Rome and Michelangelo, of course, accepted. Pope Julius ll had a big commission for Michelangelo, which was to build his tomb.The Pope also had some demands along with the tomb, it should have 40 statues and be completed in five years. Michelangelo worked hard on the tomb for 40 years and still after it was still not finished to his liking. During the same year, he had to take on another big task. Which was to paint one of the most famous artworks of all time, The Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo began working on The Sistine Chapel and only finished it in a matter of four years.
