In 1497 a work that would start a series of art that was important to the Renaissance would be made. Pieta, by Michelangelo, is a realistic statue that started Michelangelo’s career, had religious influence, and was overall impactful in history. To start it all, Jean De Billheres asked Michelangelo to build him the statue Pieta. The Pieta showed the Virgin Mary and Jesus in such detail, plus having two people was rare, and it lead to inspire many other artists. This statue was requested by Billheres, but it was for the Old St. Peter’s Basilica church. The statue had Mary holding her son after he was tortured and died. Having this depicted in the church was a way for them to show the stories in a realistic way for the people of the church.
