Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6th, 1475 in Caprese, Italy. He was an Italian painter, sculptor, poet, and architect of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, he died on February 18th, 1564 in Rome, Italy. Michelangelo descended from old Florentine family of lower nobility (16th Century Art). Michelangelo lost one of his brothers from a contagious disease, they lay in the same cradle, yet Michelangelo did not catch his disease (Clement 6). Three weeks short of his eighty-ninth birthday, this for the mid-sixteenth century was notable. At this time Michelangelo sent word to his friends, he asked Daniel da Volterra another artist to write a letter to Lionardo. He wanted the letter to say nothing about him feeling ill, just that it would be desirable for him to come to Rome as soon as he could. The letter ended in a signature from both Daniel and Michelangelo, but his was weak and the last he ever wrote. Michelangelo loved to ride horses but as the days got worse and worse he was unable to ride because of his weak legs and lack of sleep. He could only remain in a chair. After a second day in his chair, he was forced to bed rest, at this time he was surrounded by many of his friends aside from Lionardo. Michelangelo had no real will, but his last wishes were “I commit my soul into the hands of God, my body to the earth and my possessions to my nearest relatives, enjoying them when their hour comes to mediate on the sufferings of Jesus.” Michelangelo died on the 18th of February at 4:45pm.
