Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) was a famous sculptor, painter and architect whose work in the Sistine Chapel is widely known to be one of the greatest pieces of fresco work in the Italian Renaissance. Every year millions of people travel to Vatican City to see his impressive artwork. Not only is the Sistine Chapel an attraction for art lovers, but for Christians the Sistine Chapel is considered to be one of the holiest chapels. The Sistine Chapel was built between 1475 and 1483 and named after Pope Sixtus IV. In 1508, Pope Julius II requested that Michelangelo repaint the ceiling. The ceiling originally had a blue sky with golden stars. Michelangelo spent four years creating these paintings which end up becoming one of the world's most artistic masterpieces. The paintings depict nine stories from the Christian Bible's Book of Genesis. These stories include the separation of light and darkness, the creation of the heavenly bodies, the separation of land and water, the creation of Adam, the creation of Eve, the fall of man and the expulsion from paradise, the sacrifice of Noah, the flood, and the drunkenness of Noah. The Vatican Museum webpage says that “Michelangelo placed nine Central stories illustrating episodes of the Genesis within a powerful painted architecture, with at their sides figures of Nudes, holding medallions with texts taken from the Book of Kings. At the base of the architectural structure twelve Prophets and Sibyls seated on monumental thrones are countered lower down by Christ's forefathers, portrayed in the Spandrels and in the Lunettes (north wall, south wall, entrance wall). Finally, in the four corner Pendentives, the artist illustrated some episodes of the miraculous salvation of the people of Israel.” This source clearly helps to show the layout of the Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling was created using the technique called fresco. As stated by Frank (2014), fresco is a technique in which pigments suspended in water are applied to a damp lime-plaster surface (p.127). He created this beautiful art piece on a plaster ceiling using a wash technique to apply it inside a chapel located in Rome, Italy. When using this type of painting technique the paint and plaster become one in itself to make the painting become the actual wall not just on the surface. This makes the mural being made last for many years to…

Rather than having a main person as the focal point, the focus here is the book of Genesis with pictures depicting the Creation, the story of Adam and Eve, and the Story of Noah. Other significant figures surrounding the main “storyline” pictures include various prophets of the bible, sibyls who prophesied the birth of Christ from various different cultures and eras, four stories from the bible that relate to the salvation of Israel (e.g. David and the Goliath), the ancestors of Christ, and the Ignudi. Smaller details exist, such as the medallions near the Ignudi representing violet scenes from the Bible, or the various oak related items representing Pope Julius II, however these aren’t as significant to the message as those listed earlier. The main thing to note from all of this is that these scenes depict these fantastical, grandiose events in the past that seem practically unreal to those not of the faith. Unlike the message of Mary’s humanity, the Sistine Chapel is trying to convey the amazing power of God and various bible stories in the most impressive way possible.…

Though perhaps not meant as such, this work expresses Lutheran and reformist principles about man’s eternal relationship with God or about the necessity to try to establish one. The naturalistic depiction of both Adam and God makes the connection more comprehensible for believers although, this idea is just an interpretation. Creation of Adam was painted at a commission of Pope Julius II and is a fresco painting , which forms part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling; it demonstrates the Biblical creation narrative from the book of Genesis in which God breaths life into Adam, the first man that ever lived. The fresco is part of convoluted iconographic scheme and is the fourth in line in the series of panels illustrating episodes from Genesis. Michelangelo painted onto moist plaster by using a wash technique to add broad areas of colour, then as the surface dried out, he return to the same areas adding more liner methods and also combining shade as well as detail with a variety of brushes.…

Michelangelo used multiple art techniques, such as shading and contrast, to create an affect that looked as if the ceiling had three dimensional pillars and decorative pieces built into it. It is a common misunderstanding that the ceiling originally had these three dimensional pieces in it. However, Michelangelo’s ability to paint with such skill created realism in The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Realism, the idea of creating things to be true to their actual form, was shown throughout The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, for Michelangelo was able to paint objects to look three dimensional and…

It is easy to see that Michelangelo is more naturally a sculptor than anything else because his pictures, as well as his paintings, are somewhat exaggerated as if they are sculptures themselves only two-dimensional.
