Michalopoulos: 2/3 Partial Hepatectomy

Michalopoulos explains in his paper a technique called 2/3 partial hepatectomy, also known as PHx. It is primarily studied by performing surgical procedures on rodent models. He states that a rodent’s liver is multi-lobed. Therefore three of the five liver lobes, which represent 2/3 of the mass, can be removed surgically. The procedure is considered easy and so it will not damage the tissue of the remaining two lobes. The residual lobes grow and are able to restore the lost mass of the original lobes that were removed. The procedure is complete within 5-7 days following surgery.
