Michaela DePrince was born in Sierra Leone with a skin condition called vitiligo that caused her to have spots all her body. Her father died in war when she was just a few years old. Shortly after, her mother died from a sickness leaving her with no one who loved her the same as her parents. Her uncle took care of her, but not nearly as equally as his other children because of her spots. Because her uncle could not care for her anymore he took her to an orphanage where she was the most unloved of all the little girls. To make matters worse the only thing Michaela had to remember her mother by was a grass mat and that had been left in her uncle's truck leaving her with nothing from her parents. All of the caretakers had no love towards any
