Michael Thorpy Sleep Hygiene Summary

Michael Thorpy, MD, is the director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center in Bronx, New York and the author of the article “Sleep Hygiene.” In this article the author explains how to maintain healthy sleep. According to Thorpy everything in bedroom should be situated for comfortable sleep. The temperature should not be very cold or hot, the mattresses should not be very soft or very firm. Some people prefer dark bedrooms. Thorpy warns people do not overeat before sleep or use caffeine (chocolate, dark tea, coffee). Heavy food and caffeine and day naps can disturb good sleep at the night. He emphasizes importance of “regular sleep patterns seven days a week.” According to the author, it is necessary to stay in the bed not less than seven hours.
