Michael Shaara's Killer Angels

Have you ever given a speech that is to persuade somebody to do something? In the book Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and in the movie Gettysburg, Joshua Chamberlain had to and he got most of the men to do it. Josh Chamberlain was a colonel in the Union army in the Civil War.He was given 120 mutineers of a division in the Union army. Chamberlain got 114 of 120 men to join back into the army. After analyzing Joshua Chamberlain’s speech, the reader will find that the speech is very powerful. Joshua Chamberlain's speech showed many of his character traits by the way he talks to the men. One of his character traits is he is respectful. In the text it states, “I’m told to take you me with me if you don’t I can shoot you”(Shaara 8). Another one of his traits is responsible. The author states,“ I’ve been ordered to take you men with me” (Shaara 8).A final trait for Joshua Chamberlain is he is fair.An example from the text is, “I will do what I can to a fair trial”(Shaara 8). One way the movie enhances Chamberlain’s speech is the viewer can hear his voice drop a few octaves because he is nervous and trying to think of something to say. In the book the reader can not hear this. Another way the movie enhances his speech is the viewer can see his expression change from confident to nervous. In the book the reader can not see this. In the film Chamberlain was standing up straight and being relaxed but when he started speaking to the men his face tensed up and he was stuttering. In the book the reader can not see this. A final way the movie enhances Chamberlain’s speech is the viewer can see his emotions change when he says certain words. In Gettysburg Chamberlain’s emotions change from happy to sad when he says die or freedom. This shows the movie is better because the viewer can see the change in emotion.
