Michael Porter's Business Analysis

In this article Michael Porter identifies two strategic principles that associate with my current organization, the Office of Fleet Services: positioning, and fit. This bureau is part of the Department of Public Works and contributes a vital role within Atlanta City Government. The organization is responsible for acquiring and providing service maintenance to over 5,000 units of motorized equipment. Additionally, the office is responsible for the purchasing and dispensing of over three million gallons of fuel annually. Furthermore, the agency collaborates with other City departments and local residents in the delivery of various services. The Office of Fleet Services has a consistent strategy and has been very successful in the day-to-day operations that contribute into branding the City of Atlanta as great place to work and live.

For instance, the Office of Fleet Services offers vehicle maintenance repair, vehicle rentals, fueling facilities, towing services, and Online Auction opportunities. The combined functions relate and support one another, which led the division earning a spot in the 100 Best Fleet Magazine in 2012, 2013, and 2014. On the other hand, the success the Office of Fleet Services has encountered is due to understanding the difference between operational effectiveness and strategy. Operational effectiveness can be defined as performing similar functions as your competitors, meanwhile strategy is described as performing the different activities from rivals or performing the same tasks in different ways. Operational effectiveness is often duplicated by opponents, which requires the organization to endure a strategy that adds value to meet consumer demands more efficiently and effectively.
