In 2001, he became the youngest person in history to set a swimming world record by winning the 200-meter butterfly race. Michael became known for competing in multiple swimming styles including the 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, and the 200m individual medley. He went on to attend the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in sports marketing and management. Meanwhile, he resumed his training and prepared to compete in the next summer Olympics. In 2004, Michael became famous for winning eight medals, tying Aleksandr Dityatin for the greatest number of medals in an Olympics. In 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, Michael won a total of eight gold medals and secured the 14th gold medal of his career, both of which set a record. At the 2012 Olympics in London, Michael continued his winning streak by earning his 22nd Olympic medal, once again setting a new world record. Subsequently, he decided to temporarily retire. His retirement was short-lived, and he returned once again for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. There, he celebrated a huge comeback by becoming the first male swimmer to compete on five Olympic teams.
