He proceeds with a description of the many social problems affecting the black community in Philadelphia, with particular interest in those living in the Seventh Ward. He narrowed his survey to this area in order to provide accurate information about housing conditions and social class. The author used census data to identify wider general trends regarding the issues of population distribution, marital status and literacy. Du Bois used ethnographic data to cover topics on prejudice, crime and discrimination. A historical analysis was used to provide a broad context for comprehending the development of various issues like growth of support structures such as churches and community development of the black people in Philadelphia…
In Henry Louis Gates essay Forty Acres and a gap in Wealth, Henry determines the causes of such inequalities nowadays and tries to provide ways to reduce them. “We can’t afford to wait any longer to address the causes of persistent poverty among black families”, I agree with this statement because we need to start taking action now because once it starts getting out of hand than who is aware of when it’s going to stop. Poverty has increased dramatically over the past decade in the American society, so if people were to say that it’s totally the black people no one cares about them, that’s the matter with our society, it’s all a bunch of people that just cares regarding themselves. It isn’t only black people, which might be residing in poverty,…
The poor also lived in what was called the slum of the town and it was full of trash and run down houses. Then just a few miles up the hill was where the rich lived, there…
America blossomed in the 1950’s. The economy was booming; household gadgets, like refrigerators, were becoming more widely available, and suburbs developed, separating people from the chaos of a city and creating a small-town environment. As the middle class of the suburbs expanded, however, so did the widening division between the white and black opportunities. Blacks were left without the prospects whites had to improve their lives. This inequality created tension within the black community as some searched for any outlet to gain control over their lives.…
does it make sense! does it flow? is the transition okay?…
Literate Arts can be fine for explaining a variety of historical, crucial events. Richard E. Miller, author of The Dark Night of The Soul employs texts to display how the literate arts can be beneficial for emphasizing the importance of historical catastrophic events. Moreover, Miller employed a variety of “how,” and “why” questions and how to respond to them in his writing to the public to engage them in a conversation and question their views on the literate arts. Furthermore, Miller asks questions about historical events that have happened over time and probably impacted billions of civilians, which in my opinion is one thing the literate arts is excellent at describing.…
In the Camden environmental racism text, low-income, lower class groups that are mostly African American or Latino were exposed to the waste facilities and heavy industry chemicals from two federal superfund sites. Due to the fact that the facility is situated on state land, the SLC would not have to pay property taxes and would not offer any benefits to Camden and its residents. As a former industrial center, the manufacturing businesses that once provided well-paying jobs went out of business leaving behind polluted land and abandoned factories. All the white populations moved to neighboring suburban communities leaving only a population of color.…
The multifaceted class interests defines the communities like NKO, which consist of predominantly African Americans. Since gentrification is a familiar story, in which people believe that gentrification is only about improving residents’ living standards. Pattillo’s story is different because she looks at the process of gentrification within a mixed-income community while new residents deftly negotiate their stay with the formers. I enjoyed reading about how Pattillo created gentrification as being a vicious cycle of conflicting inter-class and interracial interests and not just focusing on neighborhood improvements. Although that is very important, I found it to be more enlightening to learn about how race and social status influenced urban development as Pattillo succinctly summed it as “the politics of race and class in the city.”…
Due to these factors, poverty has continued on for decades. Approximately, 16.3 percent of the Delta population is living in poverty, alone. High volume of poverty is devastating the great fertile land of the Delta. As we all know, poverty is still alive even in the 21st century. Just as the Mississippi Delta is known as the land of the rich and abundant, it can also be characterized as poor and abandoned.…
An Epidemic Unsolved It is often argued that one is a product of their environment. In other words, as theorized by Milanovic, it is geography, not genealogy, that is the primary indicator of socioeconomic status. Globally, certain patterns can be recognized of where there is a higher gap in income inequality. Subsequently, the same can be derived within the United States, which is often overlooked as an income unequal country, though income inequality between the rich and the poor is substantial. This can be highlighted most in certain states across the southern United States, as well as the region known as Appalachia towards the eastern United States.…
Alan Brown Dr. Rasnic English 1301 November 8, 2016 In Earl Shorris’ essay, On the Uses of Liberal Education, Shorris asks the question of what makes a person poor or not and what actions can be taken to reverse this. At first glance, we see that Shorris discusses the lack of education in poor areas. He originally began writing a book about the poverty in the U.S but after his experience behind the walls of a disciplinary institution, his view on poverty expanded. During his experience, he met with Viniece Walker, a guidance counselor, and requested her outlook on poverty.…
The author Earl Shorris wrote the second selection of the Harper’s Magazine “On the uses of a liberal education”, which Earl Shorris section is titled “As a Weapon in the restless Poor”. Where he was writing a book about poverty in America, but when he got the strange idea to see if Bedford Hills Correctional Facility would fit in his story. That was when he got the change of heart. Earl Shorris explains that there were numerous forces that made him curious to experiment because the Bedford hills Correctional Facility stories gave off that there was no escaping this life style. Therefore, after listen to many stories and understand what they had went through he decided to experiment to see for himself if his finding was the same as the stories that he was told.…
The poor in American Society are the victims of the social theory referred to as CONFLICT THEORY. The theory explains that the social STRATIFICTION SYSTEM is not functioning properly and the rich benefit more from the governmental decisions at the expense of the disadvantaged, those who rightly need the assistance. This theory is shockingly apparent in the Frontline documentary “Poor Kids”. This film follows the lives of three families’ struggling to deal with life’s most crippling situations the best way they can. The film demonstrates that being poor is not always a question of a PERSONAL PROBLEM related to the ABUSE of drugs or alcohol, but of a SOCIAL PROBLEM with unemployment, lack of job opportunities, and in this particular film, recession.…
Effects of Poverty from a Micro and Macro Perspective The topic of poverty has been around for many of years, and so has the relationship between poverty and behavioral theory. Behavior theory can be used to understand the impact of poverty amongst children, and it focuses on their lack of financial resources, poor housing and inadequate education. Piaget’s behavioral model also examined the connection between a child’s environment and their response to their environment (Saul, 2007). Piaget’s is used to help gain an understanding of why children that live in poverty suffers from mental health issues, low self-esteem and poor education.…
Understanding Poverty Does the poor cause their own poverty? Do people become impoverished because they don’t plan ahead or try hard enough? More often than not, people who are living in poverty, were born into their financial state. Poverty is defined as state in which the income is insufficient to provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, or clothing. People blame people in poverty for “doing it to themselves” or “it’s their own fault” when many of them can’t change their financial state.…
