When have you shown your grittiest moments and how did that help you push through your problems to move on? Grit enables you to be able to hold on in circumstances that make you feel like you don't have a chance. In the movie, The Blind Side, Michael Oher was that kid and had a similar experience like this, where his life was changed by a family named the Tuohy's. Michael was not always gritty, but with the help of the Tuohy family encouraging him and showing him what family is really about, he gained more grit. Being a kid like Michael Oher must've been hard with all of the rough experiences he was faced with, but because the help of a strong bond with a supporting family and grit, he was able overcome the obstacles he faced. At practice the coach would yell at Michael because he was doing something wrong, but wouldn't try to help him and tell him what he could do better, he just told him what he wasn't doing right. I think this made Michael start to give up a little because he kept doing things wrong. Leigh Anne Tuohy, the mother, went out on the field and explained to Michael to protect his teammates like they were family. The way that she talks to Michael makes it seem like he is actually family, which gives him a reason to feel important. With that he is able to start showing some grit because now he has a reason to keep fighting. One example of this is how Michael progresses in learning to play football and not giving up on his coach or family. The younger brother SJ would run through plays with him, put him through extra conditioning, and would never give up on him. One day at conditioning Michael stopped him and said, “can't we just go home and play some video game?” SJ explained, “Look! Everybody at Briarcrest is expecting you to be a star football player. You don't want to let them down do you?” (The Blind Side). By SJ pushing him and giving him encouraging words Michael is able to show more grit because he doesn’t want to disappoint his peers. Even though Michael wasn't sure if he wanted to play football because he didn't know a lot about it, SJ pushed him and showed him that he wasn't going to let him down. Michael realized that the family really wanted him to play football and because they didn't give up on him, he didn't want to give up on them.
