Michael Morton was a normal 32 year old father and husband. His wife, Christine Morton, was attacked and killed in their home in Williams County, Texas. (CNN) The crime occurred during the time in which Michael was at work. (CNN) Although, Michael and Christine’s three year old son Eric was at home at the time of the crime. He stated that the man that attacked his mother was a “monster” (?) Eric gave a description of what the man looked like, which concluded that the man who killed his mother was not his daddy. (CNN) In addition, the neighbors also witnessed a man who was seen parking his van behind Morton’s house. (CNN) After the police looked around the Morton house, they came across a bandana that was covered in blood. (CNN) No other evidence of the crime was found, not even the murder weapon. Michael Morton was accused of murder and sentenced to life in prison. (CNN) Even though there was no evidence, the DA Ken Anderson developed a story in which Michael murdered his wife because she refused to be intimate the night before. Anderson believed that Michael dressed up so Eric wouldn’t noticed him. (Ethics) After years of fighting, the bandana that was found at the crime scene was sent for testing in hopes the DNA would come back matching someone in the database. The DNA came back, the blood and a few pieces of hair that was located on the bandana itself was Christine’s, but there was some blood matching Mark Norwood. (CNN) Mark Norwood has a criminal background, he was convicted of murdering another women after the murder of Christine Morton. (CNN) After serving 25 years, Michael Morton was set free. (CNN) Ken Anderson was convicted of participating as an unethical prosecutor (Ethics) Anderson was sentenced to 10 days in jail, $500 fine, 500 hours of community service and he was forced to demote himself from his career as a judge. (CNN) Morton is now remarried and has such a close relationship with his son, daughter – in law and his granddaughter named after Christine. (CNN) To this day, Ken Anderson apologizes for wrongfully convicted Morton and taking 25 years of his life. (CNN) Ethical Issues There are many ethical issues that are related to this case. (CNN) He was accused of holding the evidence because he never presented the bandana that was found at the crime scene to the judge, trial members, or sending it off for testing. Basically, he didn’t proceed to correctly identify the evidence and connecting the process to the criminal investigation. (CNN) Anderson swore that he summited the evidence to the attorneys but, they admitted that they never received anything.
