Michael Kors was born on August 9, 1959, in Long Island, New York. Before Michael knew he wanted to be a fashion designer, his dream was to be an actor, especially since he stated that he loved music, movies, and the theater. When he was pursuing his acting career he took acting lessons in Manhattan for some time. However, he gave up acting at the age of 14 when he realized it just wasn’t for him. He moved to New York City for school. He attended the Fashion Institute of Technology but then dropped out after nine months to take a job at Lothars, a boutique in New York. “His great ideas and success at Lothar’s caught the attention of the fashion press.” They wanted to push Michael to his full potential, when they saw just how talented he was. That caused Michael to strike out on his own.

Whenever Michael first started out by himself, he struggled to make his business successful; he even filed for bankruptcy in the process of trying to make his brand popular. He went in thinking that the 90’s were going to be a fantastic time for him, but what he soon came to see was that it was really one of the worst times for him. In 1981 he started his womenswear line. He launched his first ever signature fragrance for women in 2000. He closely followed that by creating a men’s scent in 2001.Speaking of things for men, in 2002 he created a clothing line for men. He became a judge on project runway in 2004. He was a judge there for 10 seasons, but then left the show, by his choosing. Being a successful fashion designer and a judge on a popular TV show can be hard to handle.
