Michael Kors developed his label that was introduced in 1981. Michael Kors’ products were first sold in retail stores like Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Lord & Taylor, among others. Just after two years of creating his label, “Michael Kors was awarded the First American Original Award from Dupont in 1983. He eventually received Elle/Cadillac Fashion Award for Excellence in 1995. In 1996, he was named part of the ‘New Establishment’ by Vogue Magazine”. Vogue also called him “one of the most influential designers of the decade”.
Initially, Michael Kors was just a women's fashion line. It was in 1997 that he released a capsule menswear line, causing a new triumph for the label. This was a huge breakthrough for the brand because adding a men's line would bring in a larger, male demographic of buyers for these clothes, and men began to start wearing the label. A full-blown men's clothing collection was launched in 2002. “Kors was named the CFDA's (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Menswear designer of the Year in 2003”(Fashionintime.org)19. 2004 was a big year for the Michael Kors brand. The new lines: “MICHAEL by Michael Kors, and KORS by Michael Kors were released. These lines were released in 350 stores in the United States. These lines are made up of ready-to-wear, handbags, swimwear, jeans, footwear, and other accessories. The company has also partnered with the label Fossil, to create and launch the Michael Kors watch line”(Fashionintime.org)19. The Michael Kors watch line next to handbags, is one of the most noticeable items from this brand today.
