Kane’s father died before he was born, so Kane had no father-figure apart from his mother’s boyfriend Gary, who he didn't like. A character who had a positive influence on Kane was Cliff. This is because Kane had no real father-figure to help him with his problems, so Cliff filled that hole in Kane’s life. After Cliff touched Kane’s face, Kane said, “ Is this what it feels like to have a father touch you?” The author's intention for this quote was to demonstrate that Kane had not had the feeling of his father being around and had never bonded with anyone like that before and Cliff was the first to give the positive influence of giving him that feeling. This was because of the companionship, love and care that Cliff displayed for Kane like caring for Kane's leg when he was injured, letting Kane read his magazines and cooking Kane meals, are all things that Kane had not had much of during his life and enjoyed not having to be by himself all the time. Also proof that Cliff had a positive influence on Kane includes when Kane confronted his fear when he talked to the mother of the boy that he ran over, “I'm sorry.” The author’s intention for this evidence is to show us how much of a positive influence …show more content…

Reading Kindred, one has to wonder, has anything really changed? There is still horrible cases of racism and prejudice in the United States, more than 300 years later.…
