He was the fourth child of five in his family, and the youngest of three boys. Jordan’s family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. His mother, Deloris, worked as a teller in the bank, and his father, James, was an equipment supervisor who had served in the Air Force. His dad taught him to work hard and not to be tempted by street life. Michael went to Wilmington’s Elmsley A. Laney High School, where he developed a love for sports like basketball, baseball, and football. As a child, he was taught by his parents to be hardworking and independent. Jordan loved sports, but he failed to make his high school basketball team as a sophomore because he was too short.
