Michael Jackson’s song, Man in the Mirror, is a song that really speaks to my heart. In this song, he is talking about how he sees people going through hardships in their lives. The message of the song is saying that if we want to see a positive change in this world, we are going to have to begin by changing our own hearts. There are plenty of times when people see a situation like homelessness or suffering children, and think, “Someone should do something to help these people.” Well, if you want to see a positive change in this world, you need to be willing to help that change take place.

(History.com Staff, 2011) One of the videos Michael Jackson created during the 1980’s was a video to go along with his song, Man in the Mirror. In the video, he includes images from the past and present time of the video that show different problems going on in our country and around the world. He also shows images of people trying to help, but the main message is that people need to come together to help fix these problems. Through this song and the video, I feel as though he is trying to promote peace, unity, and love for all mankind, a message that is still a part of songs written by artists today.

Before researching this song, I felt as though I had a fairly good understanding of the meaning behind it. Now that I have learned more about Michael Jackson and the events of the world during that time, I feel that I have an even better grasp on the meaning. I was still a young girl living in a very small town when this song came out. I didn’t really have an understanding of what was going on in the word at that time. After doing my research, and watching the video again, it brings tears to my eyes. It further inspires me as a nurse to be the change I hope to see in the
