MC Hammer gained better popularity on his second album Please, Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em as it contained his chart topping song “Can’t Touch This;” this sold over 10 million copies as well as being the first hip hop album ever to go diamond. Vanilla Ice and Hammer caused some controversy over not crediting samples taken from older artists for their own music. This week as I was reading I noticed on several occasions that Baldwin’s use of the word “black,” was to insult, denigrate, or negatively describe them. Baldwin uses the word “black” when describing negative characteristics of a character, and in dialogue when the characters are insulting each other. The use of the word black with such a negative connotation comes from multiple characters; my first quote is a description of Ruth, described by John, the second is said by Aunt Florence, and Roy states the third.
