4 Black Artists who Won a Grammy for Album of the Year
When it comes to awards and recognitions for musicians, the Grammys is certainly the cream of the crop. Here are four African-American artists who earned the most prestigious, Album of the Year.
1. Michael Jackson – The legendary King of Pop won Album of the Year for Thriller in 1984. Thriller was released in 1982 and became a huge phenomenon. It became Jackson’s first number one album for 37 weeks.

In 1984, he became the first artist to bag eight Grammy Awards in just one night. Jackson was presented The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Grammy Legend Award.

In 1988, he went live on stage during the 38th Grammy Awards and performed The Way You Make Me Feel and Man

The first time was in 1974 for his album, Innervisions. The ne next year, he won again for Fulfillingness’ First Finale and another one two years later for his work on Songs in the Key of Life.

The other two are Frank Sinatra and Paul Simon. Wonder was given a tribute with a TV special: Songs in the Key of Life – An All-Star Grammy Salute where many big names in the music industry performed including himself.

3. Whitney Houston – In 1993, Houston bagged Album of the Year for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard where she also starred in. Houston was given a TV special, We Will Always Love You: A GRAMMY Salute To Whitney Houston with performances by fellow artists including Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, and Usher, among many other.

4. Lauryn Hill – She began her career as a member of the hip-hop group, Fugees and received a Grammy for Best Rap Album. She, later on, went solo and released her first album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill which landed the number one spot in the Billboard chart.

The same album earned her a Grammy Award for Album of the Year and was also the first hip-hop album to win in this prestigious category. In 1998, Hill became the first woman to take home five Grammy awards in one
