ABC is easy as 123, are the beginning words to my mother’s favorite song. Coming home from school was like the same routine, every day I would arrive home listening to Motown music on the record player, food on the stove, and my mother nagging about our homework. Not much of a battle for her because conditions were good, great music, delicious food, and mama was overwhelmingly happy. My mother was born in the 70s so, Rhythm and Blues or Motown sound as described by Jean Ferris; the author of America’s Musical Landscape (pg.278) was her era. My grandmother was very religious and since Motown did not curse or use the Lord’s name in vain my mom listened to the music habitually. The Jackson family had many children (six boys and three girls) to provide for and the work habit of Joseph (Joe) Jackson would eventually payoff and produce financial freedom and a family legacy that lives on today. According to Jean Ferris, “Michael Jackson was only five years old when Motown discovered him and his brothers, a family group- The Jacksons” (Ferris 2006, pg.278). For years, the families toured as the Jackson 5 and were very successful, since the 1960’s the family opened showed for Motown and ultimately they were the headliner. The Jackson 5 stayed with Motown until 1976, while Michael Jackson had already gone solo in 1971 with “Rockin Robin,” “Got to be There,” “Ben,” and “I Want to Be Where You Are”, the family still sang together. After the movie The Wiz, in 1978, Michael Jackson officially went “Off the Wall” with is first debut album in 1979. MTV played Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” serially in the 80s, which was unheard of because black artists did not get the same exposure as white artists such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and Billy Idol (Tick &Beaudoin 2008). Some people do not feel that the child star, turned mega star was capable of hurting a child while others could not quite understand why anyone that was innocent would pay an extortionist or blackmail. Many other people have paid settlements to avoid a trial or public embarrassment, but Michael Jackson may have fallen victim to other opportunists. Maybe the deep hurt from all of the allegations or the loneliness of being a star, whatever the real reason may have been Michael Jackson would seek the help of Dr. Conrad Murray for medically inducing his sleep. Even though family members were concerned about his use of prescription drugs in the end a deadly dose of Propofol is what ultimately killed him. Conrad Murray has been released from prison and only completed a two year sentence The list of albums and songs go on forever and his musical imprint can be seen on many different artist such as Usher, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Beyoncé Knowles all give credit to the musically Icon for inspiring their
