The instrumentation used throughout “Married Life” Giacchino to capture emotional visuals for the viewers. In the beginning scene Michael seems to be what is known as a simple four note for the melody and the use of a solo muted horn, he also used a piano and string instruments for support. He then did a shift in his instrumentation when Carl and Ellie received the news of Ellie, having a miscarriage and finding out that they were unable to have children, which is where a solo piano would display the sadness that Carl and Ellie felt.

With a light, upbeat theme he was able to capture the love that Carl and Ellie has for one another and the optimism they had. The music that he wrote displayed a 1930s waltz by using a ¾ time. Giacchino did a great job at capturing the way Carl and Ellie felt and was able to relay the musical elements throughout “Married Life” scene which create a feeling of upbeat optimism that the audience were able to also feel the what the couple were going
