and hopefully better able to face the challenges of the adventure. A critical attribute that the mentor often gives is confidence. Clemenza shows great confidence that Michael can perform the job and reassures him that all will go well. Although Clemenza plays the mentor in this earlier part of the film, Vito is the one giving Michael advice later on, after recovering from his assassination attempt.
After the hero receives the supernatural aid, he is ready to continue on his journey. Stage 4, Crossing the First Threshold, is where the hero accepts the call with physical action. The second part of the adventure of the hero, as seen in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, is Initiation. The first stage in this chapter is The Road of Trials, “the beginning of the long and really perilous path of initiatory quests and moments of illumination” (p. 90). In this stage, the hero “moves in a dream landscape of curiously fluid, ambiguous forms” (p. 81) where he must undergo a series of ordeals to begin the transformation. After killing the men, Michael is sent to hide in Sicily while the Corleone family prepares for war with the other mafia families and for a safe return for Michael. His initiation begins with his arrival in Sicily. At first, the place looks beautiful and peaceful, however, Michael faces a few obstacles. The first is the courting of Apollonia with the approval of her father. Later in the film, Sonny is killed in a brutal attack and Michael has to deal with the loss of his brother alone in a foreign country. Also, Michael’s enemies find out that he is in Sicily. Michael realizes that “dragons have now to be slain and surprising barriers passed,” (p. 90) and finally, accepts that his life will never be the same as …show more content…

One of the distinguished literary theory 's brought forth by Aristotle is the theory of the tragic hero. A comprehensive definition of this theory is a character whether in film or book who makes a judgment error that leads to the character’s own destruction. Crossing the first threshold. Boundaries broken as the person named as the hero reaches the fourth step of their journey by leaving the world they have always known behind. Terrifying and exhilarating, the threshold challenges the hero’s worth not just physically but mentally forcing them to fight to reach their destiny of infinite potential. Taking many forms, the threshold awaits each hero attempting to bypass it as symbolized by doorways and rabbit holes in tales such as Alice in Wonderland. Indeed the hero's threshold does not confront the hero for its purpose does not mean it has to be an adversary, instead it's purpose to test the hero means it must lay in wait for them to approach.…

The mentors give advice and guidance to the protagonist until they believe, or are forced, to separate and leave the hero to continue their journey, usually, alone. In The Lightning Thief, I believe that Chiron, Mr. Brunner, is the main mentor. He’s the person who mainly helps Percy understand everything that is really going on before sending him off to the real quest, unlike Annabeth and Grover who are beside Percy, all finding out different things as the quest goes…

In many works, books, movies, and other aspects of entertainment, the hero’s journey is not uncommon to the typical reader or moviegoer. The hero’s journey is one of the oldest tools to compose a piece of literature or work, however, it hardly ever fails to strike the audience as entertaining whether it be about a fictional or nonfictional occurrence. The journey to contain evil, both mythologically and realistically, requires sacrifice and courage in the face of fear, demonstrated in The House of Hades and Saving Private Ryan. One example of courage in the face of fear occurs in Rick Riordan’s…

During the beginning of the hero 's journey, he needs to pass a threshold in order to enter the new realm. This new world is new and completely different from what the hero is used to encountering. The threshold can be a physical barriar that the hero needs to cross or the threshold can be symbolic. Billy Jack crosses a spiritual threshold when he takes part in the snake ceremony. In works of literature and Magical Realism, the hero is often the main protagonist. In many novels, the protagonist is oblivious to the fact that they are a hero; they often believe that they are ordinary people in an ordinary world. In “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, Santiago is oblivious to the fact that he is a hero because he doesn’t fit the ‘Hero Criteria’, he isn’t idolize by the community or hasn’t made any drastic change in his life - he is a shepherd with no aspirations or dreams for change. However, this all changes when Santiago is faced with a recurring dream, he has no choice, but to pursue his Personal Legend. Santiago shows the characteristics of being a Hero, because he has a dream and he can easily connect with the reader,…

A hero’s journey was identified by Joseph Campbell when he recognised a similar theme across all cultures and times. The subject of the journey must endure a separation, and an initiation, before his eventual return as a hero transformed. When a hero crosses the threshold they are usually finding out ways on how to use their superpower or going to a place where they can find out how to use it. The hero leaves their “normal” place. ‘Where Three Stories Meet’ states, “As the hero prepares to pass from the Ordinary World into the world of adventure, she must get past a threshold guardian or guardians who block the way. In order to progress, the Hero will have to pass the test, co-opt the energy of the threshold guardian or defeat the guardian entirely. “ Jesus crosses the threshold in Luke 3:21.…

The hero myth is a very inspirational tale, which tells the story of how a hero is born. The hero myth gives a deeper insight in heroes, so that we can get a better understanding what it takes to be a hero. I was drawn from the reading, which got me thinking about the superhero I readied about, but truly couldn’t understand them, and can they truly be considered a hero. In the book Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, I will be using the hero 's myth to breakdown, whether Batman is fit to be the hero category. I do believe the Batman is a hero and should fit well with the hero 's myth, because of what it took him to get there.…

Interpersonal conflicts are part of everyday life and can be seen from minor disagreements with friends, families, spouses, and others to major disputes, which may be deciding factors for the future of certain relationships (Fernandez, 2008). An interpersonal conflict is a struggle between two people because they have conflicting goals or needs or because of some misunderstanding (Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond, 2005). In the episode “The Car, The Car” from the television show Everybody Loves Raymond, Raymond and Debra (husband and wife) negotiate with their parents (Frank and Marie) about the price of an old car (Frank's car), while arguing about rather it is worthy to keep the car. Frank tells Raymond and Debra that he is selling his 1972 Plymouth Valiant, and Raymond said he wants it because Debra needs a car to run her errands while they are saving up to buy a new minivan, and another reason is that because Raymond has a wonderful and special memory about his father's car.…
