As we grow up we try to discover who we are however it can be a difficult task since there are many factors that interfere with that process. For instance, everyone has different perspectives about situations due to the environment they live in, their culture, religion and more. Even though it can be hard to find ourselves, we can rely on pictures, music, art, etc to help us learn more about who we are. While doing “My Personal Anthology”, I discovered more about myself and that the question “What is an American?” can have many answers. The pieces of work that I chose were put under themes of love, determination, courage, freedom and agony. In the poem “She Was Very Strange and Beautiful,” Michael Burch portrays how even though this lady can be strange “she gave me [him] all, I [he] had nothing left. Long I [he] smiled, bereft, in her receding glow.” Growing up, some feel the absence of love, at the same time others have an abundance of love. In the song Young and Beautiful, Lana Del Rey sings “will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” She is longing to keep feeling that love even when she comes older since it is what helps her feel that happiness that is sometimes lost when a human being feels they aren’t …show more content…
When individuals are given that freedom they have more flexibility to adventure things in their life and help them discover themselves. Abraham Lincoln once said, “no man is good enough to govern another man without his consent.” In the past, the whites were “in control of” African Americans and as a result, the African Americans didn’t have the opportunity to be who they wanted to be until they fought for their rights.
Having chosen the work and picking out the themes I chose has showed me that everyone needs a bit of all of this to help them form the person they are. There will be happy days, sad days, and days with lots of motivation to succeed and each of those days will help you figure out who you are in reality. Even though I am still trying to fully discover myself, I know that my “American Dream” is to make my parents hard work pay off and make them proud by being the most successful person I can be along with being truly
