In the poem “She Was Very Strange and Beautiful,” Michael Burch portrays how even though this lady can be strange “she gave me [him] all, I [he] had nothing left. Long I [he] smiled, bereft, in her receding glow.” Growing up, some feel the absence of love, at the same time others have an abundance of love. When individuals are given that freedom they have more flexibility to adventure things in their life and help them discover themselves. Abraham Lincoln once said, “no man is good enough to govern another man without his consent.” In the past, the whites were “in control of” African Americans and as a result, the African Americans didn’t have the opportunity to be who they wanted to be until they fought for their rights.
Having chosen the work and picking out the themes I chose has showed me that everyone needs a bit of all of this to help them form the person they are. There will be happy days, sad days, and days with lots of motivation to succeed and each of those days will help you figure out who you are in reality. Even though I am still trying to fully discover myself, I know that my “American Dream” is to make my parents hard work pay off and make them proud by being the most successful person I can be along with being truly
