Michael Bateman will be graduating as a fifth year senior from Monmouth University this spring, but instead of pursuing a career in communications, he wants to work in the men’s haircare industry. Bateman is 23 years old and from South Plainfield, NJ. Originally wanting to be a touring musician, he only attended Monmouth in case he couldn’t find a band that worked well together and would be able to tour. He wanted to have a degree and to be attending a school in case he didn’t go on tour. He sings and plays the guitar and bass. When the band didn’t work out Bateman decided to stay at Monmouth and pursue a degree in Journalism and Public Relations. “Instead, I’m going to go to a nice dinner.” One of the reasons for this is because he doesn’t feel school was that that big of an interest in his life. He stated, “I believe school is important, but in my life it wasn’t everything for me.” Another reason is because he doesn’t agree with the ideas of traditions. “I don’t think people should do something or like something because someone else does it or it’s a tradition.” For example, his father, who originated from Southern New Jersey, is a fan of Philadelphia teams like the Flyers. Instead of following a team because his family does, which is the reason why most people support a certain sports team, he chose to like the New York Islanders. Bateman comes from a family with many notable figures. Some of his relatives include Ulysses S. Grant, the Rockefeller family, and civil war General G K Warren whose statue is in Gettysburg. Also his great grandfather invented the first mechanical baby swing, which he named Graco after his grandmother Grace.
